Re: How to refresh video thumbnails?

Open your file manager and make hidden files visible. Open the folder .cache in our home and delete the folder thumbnails inside. All thumbnails have to get recreated now. That worked! I deleted everything from "~/.cache/thumbnails/fail" - and thumbnails have been recreated Thanks! Very helpful, th...

Re: Anyone else get flickering desktop backgrounds and windows periodically on NVIDIA cards in Cinnamon?

Interesting, I have the same issue with a dual and one triple screen setup, both using Nvidia cards and Nvidia drivers. Here is my system configuration: Cinnamon: 4.0.0 Muffin: 4.0.0-1 xorg-server: 1.20.3-1 nvidia driver: 410.66-3 Linux Kernel: 4.18.16 GPU on System 1: Nvidia GTX 970 (Intel CPU with...

Thank You for 6 Great Years and Good-Bye!

First off, a big, big thank you to the Team for creating Mint. I have been an avid Mint user since Mint 13 (migrating from Ubuntu) and still have Mint 17 running on many machines in the house. Hey, I have even donated to the project a few times and certainly have advocated it. Actually, I still advo...

Re: My review of Mint 18

Unfortunately, I have not been that lucky with systemd and Mint 18. I have one machine where it works without a problem (ancient Dell D630 notebook), but this machine is fairly vanilla in configuration and does not do anything outlandish. Not so on my Precision M4500 notebook that runs docked with t...

Re: Nemo Slow to Load Folders [Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon]

"nemo-media-columns" is the "bad guy", even it isn't used in the "detailed list" view. Just wanted to add another data point in favor of the above approach: the slowness of Nemo has plagued me as it has others - but it wasn't until mideal 's heroic post quoted above that I found Nirvana: sudo apt-g...

Thanks for the feedback. At least they should put this under "known issues", if nothing else.

"Indicator Support" in Mint 17.3 breaks some applications

When Indicator support is turned on (System Settings -> General), which appears to be the default, several applications have issues. This includes Gnome EncFs Manager and its alternative, Cryptkeeper . The encrypted folder list is now displayed in the new notification format, which looks great, but ...

Resolve slow loading of large directories in Nemo

I have observed that loading a directory with many thumbnails is extremely slow in Nemon on Mint 17 or 17.1, while it was much faster in Mint 13. Apparently, the culprit is the thumbnailer used. This is now the totemthumbnailer, as ffmpeg seems to be deprecated by the Mint developers, for whatever r...

Re: boot time could be speeded up!

Hello, xsog. 5 seconds as well as 5 min. seem to be really extreme values. Personally I have never seen a machine that managed to make the way from the Grub boot menu to the MDM greeter logon screen in 5 seconds. But none of the machines here has got an SSD. They all boot from good old SATA II disk...

Re: boot time could be speeded up!

i find the boot time really slow wish it could be speeded up. :D Mint 16 boots in less than 5 seconds here*, what exactly would you like to improve? Granted, with old hardware it takes longer, but that can hardly be improved by OS design. *boot time from Grub Menu to Login Screen (Core i7, UEFI boo...

Re: Why doesnt Mint try and do an Arch or Gentoo version?

I am not sure what the point would be of yet another version of Mint based on a different flavour of Linux. Ubuntu and Debian are quite sufficient. Debian is a also great fallback if the Ubuntu guys should go completely off their rocker. If anybody in the Mint Team wanted to do something truly diffe...

Re: What is your opinion about SSD?

SSD prices have been dropping sharply over the last few months. I just bought two SSDs lately at these prices: Seagate 600 Series 480 GB: $279 Intel 530 Series 240 GB: $129 Yes, they are still more expensive than a hard disk and the above were special sales prices (Canada, plus sales taxes). But the...

Re: Saucy Salamander is a fiasco: The worst Ubuntu release e

WIth the current support periods, anything but the LTS versions are just experimental releases anyway, in my opinion. I see no practical use in an operating system that has 9 months of support at best. In that light, I really don't believe this to be an issue. If Ubuntu 14.04LTS should turn out to b...

Ubuntu Builder vs. Mintconstructor

I recently had the need to build a custom install image, because of the following considerations: Mint 13: in support until 2017 (good), but Kernel to old to work on the target machines Mint 14: end of support April 2014 - pointless to install now Mint 15: end of support January 2014 - pointless to ...

5 months of support

For the just-released KDE version of Mint 15, support is just 5 months. I am not sure how it makes sense to even install it with that kind of support, except to toy around with it. While the effort on behalf of the Mint team to release this is truly appreciated, I am afraid it is also somewhat waste...

Suggestion: fix show-stopping bugs!

Coming from Ubuntu, I am used to the fact that serious bugs are either not fixed or that it literally takes years. Somehow I had the impression that the Mint developers do a better job, but I begin to have my doubts. Take this bug for an example: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/889460 The ...
