Re: rtcwake missing from repository?

You are correct. Not sure now why it didn't work last night and was too groggy this am...but I thought I saw a "not found" error. It is handy to bring a computer out of sleep if you have a data cap and a "free" period when most of us are trying to sleep but the command structure is not totally clear...

[solved]rtcwake missing from repository?

I tried today to install rtcwake on two computers but got the following:
apt-cache policy rtcwake
N: Unable to locate package rtcwake
Any work arounds for this? I had recently added it to another Mint 19.1 box but now it is not avallable,

Re: Just LM 19.1 test report

I noticed that icons on the desktop do not want to open, or if they do they take almost 1 second (or longer) to open. HTOP will not open from the desktop at all anymore. That is an issue. NOTE: It does open if I launch it from the panel but not from the desktop. What is your system and graphics ada...

Re: [SOLVED] Static IP in 19 Xfce?

This was always an ethernet connection (wired)...never wifi. The "Edit Connections" selection that a right click on the connection icon in the panel gets is the answer here. if you then highlight the "wired connection" and click on the little geared wheel at the bottom left, you can change the vario...

Re:[SOLVED] Static IP in 19 Xfce?

Thanks to all, I was able to find the settings in the connection gui. The command line methods are still a mystery to me but I was able to set the static IP. Normally, I would use the router to make this selection but in this case, I am trying to invoke the Asus router's "rescue mode" in an attempt ...

[SOLVED] Static IP in 19 Xfce?

This has probably been asked and answered but I cannot find it if it has...sorry in advance. I have beaten my head against a wall trying to set a static IP for my Linux Mint 19 installation and I am regretting ever having upgraded from 17.3. Searching here and on the web with google has been fruitle...

Firefox extensions borked and recovered

This morning I expanded my main partition for Mint with Gparted using my live 19 Xfce4 USB key. (When I had loaded the new SSD from a recovery snapshot, it loaded to the same partition size as the snapshot...half the new SSD) That went well but when I rebooted to the SSD, it refused to load past the...

Re: Mint 19 Xfce

Confirming that the upgrade from 18.3 does not get you a new kernel...same old 4.13.0-45-generic as before on my upgraded 19. I did a full install of 19 on another HD on the same machine and it is the 4.15 series. Additionally, the cool new wallpapers that come with 19 do not show up in the upgrade....

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

Not sure what constitutes a conflict where I have to manually remove items. 2159 upgraded, 435 newly installed, 39 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 1,910 MB of archives. After this operation, 1,536 MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue? [Y/n] N Abort. Do I have ...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

The upgrade from 18.3 went smoothly enough following Clem's helpful instructions but several things got lost in the shuffle...mostly the Xfce panel. The Update Manager, Time, the Action Button and Audio volume all got lost and the running programs got shifted to the right side of the panel. Also, wh...

"...my eyes glass over any time I see a huge dump..." The new-speak acronym is TLDR... Too Long Didn't Read. No speaka "new speak' here. Re: HP printer: how to get printing from Firefox happening?

As an old XP Pro expatriate 16 years ago, welcome to linux and mint. In the giant data dump you posted, I saw nothing of your installing and configuring "CUPS". HPLIP does not do that for you and you must manually install and configure it: from a terminal, sudo apt install cups . You can also do thi...

From an earlier post on this forum, have you tried removing the "Installation Media" and rebooting? You may still be on the "live" medium, in which case, no login,

Re: Frequent failure after wake from suspend

Legitimate question. You may use them interchangeably but the desktop does not in my case...two distinct functions. And by the way, your assumption that I have any notion of what Vista does or doesn't do is faulty...never used it. XP was my last dance with uSoft. OTH, you are the expert. I just made...

Re: Unable to mount partitions from a boot disk from a prior PC

You should be able to read the HD that is in the external USB enclosure using the file manager in the linux desktop. You might have to make a new directory for it and mount the HD to that directory. You can use sudo fdisk -l to find the listing/name of the old drive (/dev/??) and mount it to the new...

Re: How to see which programs are using bandwidth (and minimize usage) while on cellular data plan

It probably is not the running programs that are gobbling BW, rather the extra stuff and nonsense that is being loaded into your browser all the time. I live within a 5G monthly data cap on my satellite plan by using "PiHole", "NoScript", "uBlock Origin" and by changing my Firefox preferences to pre...

Re: cant boot after failed update

You did not mention which edition(s) you are working with. Have you tried booting from a live disk or USB key? If that is ok, it could be that you have a chicken-egg problem with your repositories...ie, trying to use the wrong repo listing to update/upgrade. The best thing to do would be to install ...

Re: Frequent failure after wake from suspend

Are you using "Suspend" or "Hibernate" functions...you say "sleep". Using the Xfce4 desktop, "suspend" saves the current desktop to memory and then puts everything into a low-power state including the monitor. The fan turns off altogether but USB is still powered as is the motherboard memory.Touchin...

Re: Cannot login on fresh install of Linux Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" - Xfce (64-bit)

my issue is why the installer automatically boots into the live CD at the end of the intallation without any interaction (warning/approval) with the user? That is much more the root of the problem, IMHO. The installer is simply a program in the live environment and it finishes, leaving the live env...
