I just tried following command:
sudo apt reinstall mint-meta-xfce.
The command was processed correctly however after rebooting the notebook the problem is still there.

so reinstall mint-meta-xfce package ...
Should following install command work?:
sudo apt-get reinstall mint-meta-xfce
Does the notebook need an Internet connection for this command?

@kukamuumuka, Thank you for the hint. Removing the VB components was the first measure I took. After that however the problem remained. The update of VB which apparently lead to the problem as reported in the postings was not performed at the affected notebook, therefore I suppose another reason for...

just to conclude this thread: in the setup of the router the mac filter was activated, preventing additional WLAN devices to be admitted... :oops:

Hello, well, as far as I remember, if I select full encryption - a choice presented at the very beginning of the installation - I was not asked any more for a dedicated home encryption later.
