Re: Ubuntu 14.04 (Cinnamon desktop) Locked on Boot Up

People are still reading this thread, so just to let them know, I gave up on my installation and reinstalled Ubuntu 14.04 and have just stuck to the Unity desktop. My Cinnamon desktop version would get to the desktop and then just freeze. Oh well, Mint 17 is coming out by the end of May anyway. Righ...

Panel Menu Not Responding to Mouse Clicks

I installed Linux Mint 17 and moved my old home into it using rsync. I knew there would be some hiccups doing it this way, but for the most part everything is working fine. However, the only show stopper here is that my menu button doesn't respond to either mouse button, but the menu opens using the...

Ubuntu 14.04 (Cinnamon desktop) Locked on Boot Up

I hope this is the right forum as it was the only one I found corresponding to Cinnamon forum. I installed cinnamon 2.2 on my freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS using the nightly build repository. It booted fine and worked as it should, but today it is no longer functioning as it is locked as soon as...

Re: Mint 13 Long Boot Waiting for Non-Existent UUID

Not to leave this thread unresolved, I continued on to find the problem of a long boot time. Using the command "dmesg | less" in a terminal, I was able to view the events around the time of abrupt steps in the boot sequence. After some experimentation, I saw a line where the init process was looking...

Re: Mint 13 Long Boot Waiting for Non-Existent UUID

I found the problem with my UUID and corrected it and I also tried the /dev/sdb3 change to no effect. I still have the long boot time. (see above reply).

Re: Mint 13 Long Boot Waiting for Non-Existent UUID

I checked my /etc/fstab file and found the errant UUID. I must have moved things around to a point where the swap's UUID changed. I changed the UUID and rebooted. The error message was gone, but the boot time was still over three minutes. So I did a "dmesg | less" and found a couple of large jumps i...

Re: Mint 13 Long Boot Waiting for Non-Existent UUID

Thanks Hibba,

I should have tried my /etc/fstab, but I forgot that part. I'll also turn off my floppy in the BIOS. I'll post my results soon.

Mint 13 Long Boot Waiting for Non-Existent UUID

When I boot my Mint 13 using the GRUB menu pick, it starts the normal boot and then after a few seconds a message appears saying that it is waiting for a drive to come up and I can wait, tell it to skip, or go into recovery mode and fix the problem. If I let it sit for a few minutes, it finally boot...

Re: Can Not Return to Desktop from Virtual Terminal- Maya

Just got back from trying a virtual termain ctrl-alt-F1, logged in as root, explored around and did an exit to get back to login prompt. Hit ctrl-alt-F9 and the machine and the log in prompt justed stayed on. I left and got some lemonade and came back to the SOS. So again, I logged in as root and di...

Re: Can Not Return to Desktop from Virtual Terminal- Maya

Well, I guess there's nothing left to try but F9. Getting back is a pain. :)

Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Problem with rsync

If I try this code, it works fine. Is it because I am trying to sync from my external USB drive to a folder in my Desktop folder Home directory? rsync -r -t -v --progress --delete -s /home/randy/Desktop/test1/ /home/randy/Desktop/test2 In the above, the / right behind test1 is EXTREMELY important i...

Re: Cannot see extract option for files on right click list

Right click gives me : Extract right here in the drop down menu. Double click the icon from where you want to extract and File Roller has an Extract button right up in it's top menu of the dialog window. Other than that I don't know what else to say.

Can Not Return to Desktop from Virtual Terminal- Maya

I don't usually use a virtual terminal and I don't know what possesed me to go into one, but I did using the standard ctrl-alt-F[1-6]. I looked around and didn't edit anything, I was just exploring. When done, I exited the terminal and was back at the login prompt. I did the normal return trick of c...

I'll ask the first obvious question: when the usb first boots up, it gives you an option to check the media. Does it pass?

Re: Performance Issues on USB

I've tried this before myself. The live USB is made really for evaluation and installation and not usually to be used as a portable OS stick. What I did was to install Mint on it like a regular drive. In other words, I put the stick on and then used an installer disk/stick to install Mint on it. The...

Language Does Not Exist

I've searched this subject and they all match mine, but there is not one single reply to any of them. The message at boot: Language en_US does not exist: Using system default. Really, someone has to know how to correct this one. Mine occurs just after I sign in and the boot up is ready to finish. I'...

Re: LinuxMint12/Gnome3 Assessment

If UEFI is locked, I don't think Intel designed it to be so when they set the EFI standard. I would highly suspect Apple to be the perpetrator if it is. Look at the history of BIOS. Without the switches we would have been at the mercy of the hardware tyrants. Without freedom, there is no future. :(

Re: LinuxMint12/Gnome3 Assessment

Believe me. I believe in Linux. I will do my best to promote it. Even though I have to guide people through the installation process to get them to the right point. Crickey! :D I don't give up easily!!!

Re: LinuxMint12/Gnome3 Assessment

I'm sorry if I sound so intense. I got this way when Apple talked about going to Unix and didn't do jack before Steve Jobs came back. Linux was my liberation to Unix. As an engineer I know the importance of all of the aspects to an OS even though I'm a lowly rf design engineer. Although I've been a ...

Re: LinuxMint12/Gnome3 Assessment

So Linux is for the technical elite? That gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. :P Open software is open to everyone, not just the ones that know how to use vi and write a php script. My door is open to anyone wanting to learn how to use a computer, even if all they can do is stumble and barely get by. I s...
