Update, kind of, just wait a long while and meld came good in the end, patience it seems. Limiting the number of directories to compare in one go will always help (split collection into sub folders, compare in turn, then re-assemble).

In Meld preferences I put:

Tick - compare files based only on size and timestamp

File filter - media only ticked

Encoding, deleted text in box

much faster etc

It's "?" in song titles that it's having a problem with it seems.

":" is a problem too, as soon as i delete these from the filename it works, a pain doing it all manually though but hey ho
