Re: Windows 7

The aero effects in windows 7 take a lot mmore graphics capability than the compiz effects in linux do. You can get some effects out of Linux in a virtual box but you get nothing from windows in a virtual box.

How Odious the Deception

I just installed Debian Squeeze in a Virtualbox to try it out. I have always just used Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora because I believed all this time that Debian was somehow complicated or difficult. 1. The installation is not even in the slightest bit difficult. It works almost EXACTLY like Ubuntu, Mint ...

Re: They actually delete your comments

It was this thread:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=157&t=63098

The comment was that altair should look into using remote desktop to solve people's SAMBA problems because he seems to spend hours on the forum answering esentially the same question over and over.

They actually delete your comments

Interesting. I just realized that the moderators of the Mint board delete comments. I put a comment on a thread so that I would be able to see it on "view your posts" when I visit the board and I was somewhat confused by why it was not showing up. So I tracked down the thread and... there you go! Go...

Tiresome how you have to keep switching into that overall view that shows all of the open windows and then back again.

Re: CPU limited on a Gigabit network

Thanks for the thread eiver and the reply wayne. In thinking about my system speed I never really gave much thought to the network speed before... now that I have started researching my network a little bit I am learning a lot. For example, I have always had this little Tenda usb wifi device that I ...

Re: CPU limited on a Gigabit network

I bought a D-Link DIR-655 today just to see if the gigabit ethernet would really be faster... On my two machines that ware gigabit capable, the transfer rate never got over 12 MB/s. This was barely faster than the 10/100 Trendnet router I was using before. Now begins the long interesting journey of ...

Re: Any video card recommends for Mint 10?

Depemds on what you are doing with it. If you want to run BOINC processes that are GPU intensive and use CUDA then sure go get yourself a $200 nVidia card. Otherwise, there is very little you are likely to do with Mint 10 that is going to require intensive graphics. What kind of monitor are you plan...

Re: ATi CCC

I use the catalyst control center with my ATI cards and I have never had any problem. There isn't enough information in your post to really say anything concrete. What operating system are you using? What kernel? Is the driver actually working after you installed it? The driver is not the same thing...

Well, after reading the comments on the toms hardware article cited by piquat my feelings about it have changed. I recommend anyone reading the article to read the comments as well.

Re: Installation Partition question

You boot into windows and you go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security and you will see Administrative Tools. One of the options will be "Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions" and you select that option. When it opens it will show you everything on the disk much like gparted does. You rig...

Re: CPU limited on a Gigabit network

My goofy little network only ever gets up to about 11 mb/s. I know there is a bottleneck somewhere but I never have time to figure it out. After reading that article I think my weekend project is going to be trying to get number up!

Re: I AM EXTREMELY TICKED

I seriously wish that all of those magazines and online blogs that encourage people to try out linux would stop telling people who have no idea whatsoever how to use a computer beyond playing games and looking at the internet to DUAL BOOT, which is a complicated and exotic way to use a hard drive. I...

Re: LMDE latest release a black eye?

I am somewhat embarrassed by the fact that in installed LMDE a couple of months ago and except for a problem with updating early on it has worked just fine. So, I haven't really felt that much sympathy for the huge number of people who have been whining about how its broken. It is somewhat unrealist...

I don't think Julia killed windows, I think you moved a folder called System thinking that it was all you need to run your windows partition?

Re: Thank You

All I am saying is I don't like the idea that Linux is for disgruntled Windows users. Its a dead end marketing approach that was popular when Red Hat first launched. We live in a diverse ecosystem and we all add value to each other's work. I don't know anyone except a few Apple users who use just on...
