Same again this morning.
Mind you, Skype is part of M$ - could that be significant? :?

Skype update error

Update Manager displays a red cross, and I get the error: " Exception occurred in the refresh thread: <class 'subprocess.CalledProcessError '>". and " Failed to fetch https://repo.skype.com/deb/dists/stable/main/binary-amd64/Packages.bz2 Hash Sum mismatch. Some index files failed to download. They h...

Re: Do I still need these PPAs?

Thanks again.
I shall pack my confusion away in a box in the loft, keep the PPAs, and carry on as before.

Oh yes, and mark the topic "Solved" .

Re: Do I still need these PPAs?

Thanks for your reply, and I shall, as advised, hang on to the PPAs, but I'm still confused [it's easily done  ].
As I said earlier, my HomeBank package was installed from Synaptic. These screenshots show what's installed.

Re: Do I still need these PPAs?

I don't even remember what the mkusb were for, but as HomeBank [which I do use] is in the Software Manager can I assume it will still get updates if I remove those PPAs?

Do I still need these PPAs? [Solved]

I was running HomeBank version 5.0.3-2 on Linux Mint 18.2 Mate, which Synaptic Manager told me was the latest version. When I found that it was over 3 years old, I installed the PPA from their website, whereupon Update Manager almost immediately upgraded to 5.1.8 [This thread refers https://forums.l...

Re: Potentially fatal mistake? Incomplete upgrade

" I know nobody cares and would be happy with a quick message saying the problem was solved ," Not necessarily. You'd be surprised [perhaps] at the number of times folk are asked for more detail about their problem. The good folk on here do care, in my experience. If you are satisfied your problem i...

Re: Understanding Linux Mint Releases

Linux Mint only comes in the form of LTS releases. Version numbers are sequential. Since Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS releases, the release cycle depends on theirs. In practical terms that means a new Linux Mint version is released every 2 years, so you will get Linux Mint 20 in 2020. Linux Mi...

Re: Unknown HomeBank file

I found that 5.0.3 was over 3 years old, so I bit the bullet and installed the ppa from the website.
Update Manager almost immediately upgraded to 5.1.8, which seems to work satisfactorily.
Many thanks for your interest and help.

Topic marked as solved.

Re: Unknown HomeBank file

Synaptic Manager is telling me that I have the latest version, 5.0.3-2.
I'm running Mint 18.2, I wonder if you using Mint 19 is the difference?

So same question, should I update, or wait for the system to take care of it?

Re: Unknown file

Thanks for your reply. So first things first - if that's a back-up file I'll forget trying to delete it. As I said in the OP, I only noticed this file after updating HomeBank today. [Updating my transactions, not HomeBank itself] My current version is 5.0.3. I don't recall seeing any updates recentl...

Unknown HomeBank file [Solved]

I use HomeBank to record my housekeeping transactions. After updating HomeBank today, I noticed an unknown file had appeared, "Our Money.xhb~.CTKNNZ" [see screenshot] It asks to be opened with GIMP, and when trying to delete the file I get the error: " No such file or directory" , and it will not al...

Re: Cannot mount DVD drive

Thank you. I've sussed out your first point, but when I select the DVD drive that way, nothing happens, which led me to look at the desktop Computer icon. As I understand it, to run a Live DVD [which is what I'm trying to do], the media is placed in the drive and the computer then rebooted. When I d...

Cannot mount DVD drive [Solved]

Hi, I had to rearrange the boot order to read a USB drive with the downloaded ISO of Mint 19. I put the USB as Option 1, and the DVD drive as Option 2, the HDD as Option 3. When I try to read a magazine cover DVD of the same distro, nothing happens. The desktop Computer icon shows the drive as prese...

I always label each one so that I know what the configuration was for that snapshot.
That's something I'll have to start doing - thanks.

Re: TimeShift storage questions

I think I understand, so I repeat my original question: "Is it safe [or wise] to delete all snapshots except the first and last" ?"

Re: TimeShift storage questions

Yes indeed....
I suppose that it could be likened to Window's System Restore, thereby allowing the user to chose the restoration point, but if space is limited then one has to decide which snapshots to delete.
