Re: Bootable USB Not Found in BIOS

Not all computers see all devices in all the same ways via BIOS, so the challenge can be to figure out what your machine can see and/or to configure your USB device accordingly. On one of my machines, BIOS must be set to "Enable Legacy USB", then Puppy Linux can be used to format the USB stick in an...

Re: Display problems on 2008 computer (Mint 16 Cinnamon)

I have LMDE Mate running just fine on a Dell 1150 notebook, and the Broadcom b43 driver available through the Synaptic Package Manager was the only one I had to add.

Re: Overwrite of windows xp

I realize that I will lose access to XP by doing a full install of Linux Mint. Only if that is your wish. "Full install" does not have to include completely taking over the entire machine. My question is: If I give away or donate the laptop later, does the full install of Linux over WinXP wipe out ...

Re: What exactly happens with "dual boot" setups?

Unlike Windows systems, Linux systems don't care where they are installed. When I boot on Windows, GRUB is smart enough to swap the drives so that Windows thinks it is booting from the first hard drive in the system (still wondering exactly how that swap command in GRUB works :) ). In Grub4Dos, tha...

Re: Windows 7 and Linux Mint 13 dual boot

So if I use GParted to delete partitions, is that safe? Because I'm thinking of deleting the Linux partitions, and then reinstall Linux into the empty space. It is best to use Windows to do the deleting so its own awareness of the drive and partitions comes from itself, and I use Windows to make th...

Re: Windows 7 and Linux Mint 13 dual boot

I now have Windows 7 going by following some instructions found elsewhere. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=145203 Now my computer boots only to Windows 7. That got you going a bit, obviously, but now you have brought a third loader into the mix and will have to either completely re...

Re: No Bootable Partition In Table

I've installed Mint 16 on an upgraded Dell Dimension 8400 and everything was stable and cool. Does that simply mean the installation went well or that you were later able to restart your machine and actually boot into the new installation? I booted the machine earlier tonight and got the error mess...

Re: Windows 7 and Linux Mint 13 dual boot

I deleted a partition... ...stuffed up my dual booting grub facility... Where is the boot script located? It was likely in the hard drive's boot sector, and Linux would likely call it "/dev/sda". What actually is grub? A menu system typically installed in the boot sector of a hard drive or partitio...

Re: Dual boot Win7 and Mint 17

The laptop is pretty straightforward : install Win7 first, free up some HDD space with the partition tool in Windows, and install mint 'alongside Windows'. Right (correct me if I'm wrong) ? Yes, that is fine, and using Win7 to do the rezizing and making the new partition (without assigning a drive ...

As I can make grub appear?
If your machine is booting into the Windows 7 menu, you can use EasyBCD to add Linux to the menu. In EasyBCD, tell it to use Grub2.

Seems support is not mint's string-point;
The video issue there is with the Intel chipset, I believe, not Mint. My resolution on that machine is limited in any OS, not just one.

Yes, and if your video card also has a TV connector, you might have to tell Mint to turn that off.

Re: Linux Mint 15 and Grub4DOS multiboot DVD

Many thanks to each of you! For the moment, this in menu.lst gets me to the GRUB menu for LMDE: title Grub2 find --set-root /boot/grub/core.img kernel /boot/grub/core.img boot However, I would still like to be able to bypass that GRUB menu and boot into LMDE directly from Grub4Dos. Adding "root=uuid...

Re: Dell 2707 monitor - need drivers

Since I have exactly the same thing going on with an older notebook, I suspect that is an Intel graphics issue and not a matter of drivers for the monitor.

Re: Linux Mint 15 and Grub4DOS multiboot DVD

Here has a typo. Your installation is /dev/sdd not /dev/sdb .. :D I already tried that and it makes no difference. Having the partition's UUID in Grub4Dos sends the machine to the correct location where LMDE's boot routine begins but then drops out when BIOS (I suspect) cannot report the correct "f...

You have the wrong kernel line and i nitrd.img is missing. it should be something like this: title LMDE MATE Edition (sdb7) uuid 3355a438-b4b0-4247-b1b8-0151ea125dfe kernel /boot/vmlinuz-something-here root=/dev/sdb7 ro initrd /boot/initrd-something-here.img Many thanks, and now I am much closer by...

If so, try using the 386 version (rather than 686) from here (if I remember correctly):

Somewhere I had read something about choosing that specific kernel during installation.

Re: Linux Mint 15 and Grub4DOS multiboot DVD

How about booting from Grub4Dos into an installed copy of Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon or LMDE on an internal hard drive? I presently get there by using a Linux entry in the Windows 7 BCD menu made by EasyBCD, but I would like to not have to do that. Using the Grub4Dos installer from Puppy Linux, here is ...
