Re: Backups

Yup, Vincent has it on the nose. I really do like Linux, but it's just been too much of a struggle getting programs to work for me, so much so, that at the moment, I'm reduced to banging on a keyboard and nothing else. My printer does work, but I have no scanner and there's no sound input to this th...

Re: Backups

Well, I know I can't buy a new computer with XP, but if I get through this mess, it shouldn't be a problem. One of the first things I read on that page was "This article is intended for an advanced user." That I ain't, but I' try to slog through it, nonetheless. Thanks. Still lookin' for t...

Re: Backups

Nah, this one was loaded with Vista. I think Vincent can tell you, I went through absolute hell trying to get rid of it, getting Mint and then trying to work with it. I just don't have the know-how and despite all my efforts, reading sites, trying things, downloading and ordering books, I just could...

Re: Backups

Like most of the stuff I'm encountering with this technology is just gobbledy-gook to me. On the Remastyrs site, it says " If your kernel doesn't have the squashfs-modules and either the aufs-modules or unionfs-modules, you MUST use a different kernel". No one in this techno world speaks p...

Re: Backups

As far as computers go, I feel the ultimate fool at the moment. And yes, you are older than me, but I'm not handling my slide into seniority gracefully, at all. Just about everything is in my home folder because I have a lousy time trying to find things on these wonders of technology. I had a tough ...

Re: Backups

I used XP quite effectively for five years before I trashed my registry with some tools I'd downloaded trying to figure out what was up (suddenly, it said I required SP2, which I already had, and wouldn't let me download it, constantly hanging up as a result). I took a cross-country trip and without...

Re: Backups

I have to assume it's mounted, since the right-click shows an option to unmount. In my Backup Tool I have the options to backup or cancel and tabs for excluded tabs and hidden paths. Below the window there are choices for exclude files, exclude folders and remove.

Backups

I looked in my "bible," I've searched the forums and peeked in a couple o' other places, but can't seem to find specific information for this (and I need specific info!). I've tried to back this thing up, but it seems to be a pain. Last time I tried, I used the backup tool and it performed...

Re: Failed Echo-Skype, no sound

Fiddlin' around, wastin' time as usual, thought I'd revisit this baffling problem and squinty-eyed blind, impatient man I am, I missed the suggestion to twiddle the controls in the alsamixer. OK, It's up in terminal. Now, how do I twiddle? Got it, sort of. I got all values up to 90, but now I'm tryi...

Re: Google ditches Windows on security concerns

Yeah, G-mail. Turned off buzz and it worked. Knew some setting would do the trick. Trouble was, getting into Settings, but finally got somewhere with it. Thanks.

Re: Google ditches Windows on security concerns

Ahh,,, Google again. I can sign-in, but all it does after that, whenever I click on something besides "Sign Out," it just says "Loading..." Right now, I'm trying to get to the settings so I can go to a simpler format.

An apology

To all you Minties, old and new, I apologize. I'm just a frustrated, impatient jerk sometimes. I'm just really anxious to get off the ground with Helena after having fruitlessly fought with Vista for months, but I've let my shortcomings stunt my learning curve. I've done a lot of ranting and raving ...

Re: Google ditches Windows on security concerns

OK, I'm a bit better today. Just posted a message to my niece, whom I haven't seen in over fifteen years. Trying to treat my skin, I have a damned sore on my nose. Yeah, I'm still grumpy, but I'm still tryin' to come out on top in this battle. Life just sucks sometimes. Guess 'll go put somethin' do...

Re: Failed Echo-Skype, no sound

I've looked at everything, tweaked everything and I still have no sound out of this beast. It's baffing. It's like one o' those effin magic problems I had in the Navy in reverse (I was an EW Tech for 6 years, an excellent tech); troubleshoot a problem, find nothing, put it back together and it works...

Re: Brother MFC-490CW (scanner this time)

Help! A scanner is a big part of my hobby and I feel quite crippled w/o it. I thought sure this must be it a few times, but no go. Just tell me what you need to see and I'll post the info or image.

Re: Google ditches Windows on security concerns

Yeah, I ain't a big fan o' Google neither, but this whizbang piece o' technological wonder is how I keep track o' my meager income. Ahh... I could princess forever, but it ain't gonna do a bit o' good. My life ain't worth squat right now, but I keep tryin' to make sense of it. I'm so far behind now,...

Me, the packrat? Yeah I got it somewhere. I've found though, in trying to get rid of my excess paper, that I've occasionally trashed something I should've kept.

Re: [UNsolved] Map Tools and Fantasy Grounds

Deleted the php file and the tar ball you provided. Created MapTool.sh on my desktop (a file, not a folder) Ran the chmod command. Nuthin' so that's good (terminal simply dropped to new line for input). Double-clicked the file, hit "Run," nothing happened. Here's what's in the file (copied...
