Re: To firewall or not to firewall, that is the question?

It's a broad term: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_things. For the example I gave, that company makes their washers & driers and other appliances (also kitchen appliances) talk to each other and to their servers. It's presented as a "smart home" solution. There's nothing sma...

Re: Should i set/create my own server?

Before setting up a server that will be talking to the world, you need to ask yourself are you capable of locking it down to prevent unauthorized access. Far too many individuals think having their own server is the epitome of cool and then find that their beloved box has been infiltrated and taken ...

Re: I swapped to Linux Mint. I went back to Windows, here's why

Linux has been on my machines for over 20 years now. I generally set my machines up with a dual boot capability in order to keep a copy of Winderz on hand when needed. Rarely do I need to boot to the "dark side", and usually that's to game with one of my kids who lives in another country. ...

Re: Broad question: Any tips on good laptop which will allow changing the boot sequence with minimum fuss?

Turns out that these days when you get a windows computer it starts a setup process that you can't complete without creating a Microsoft account. I wasn't having any of that. Can you tell its been some time since I bought a new computer? If you aren't connected to the Internet while doing the insta...

Re: Broad question: Any tips on good laptop which will allow changing the boot sequence with minimum fuss?

My ASUS 17" has two actual physical drive bays in addition to the DVD player on the side. I've had this thing for years, it's been an absolute workhorse for me. The day it gives up the ghost will be a sad sad day.

Re: Broad question: Any tips on good laptop which will allow changing the boot sequence with minimum fuss?

Generally, I look for a laptop that has two drive bays. Bay 1 gets the Linux drive, Bay 2 gets the Winderz drive. On boot up, I'm presented a choice as to which drive I wish to boot to.

Re: Doing all the right things but not getting W10 showing in install

Greetings, I've been wanting to install Mint 20.1 Ulyssa for some time now on my desktop PC. I want it to be a dual boot system with Windows 10. Ulyana is the existing Linux installation and when I proceeded to install Ulyssa, the installer doesn't show Windows 10, but it does show Ulyana. I looked...

Re: Upgraded from 18.3 to 19, fails to login.

There was a recent Mesa update with Mint 18.3. When I ran the upgrade check, I was informed that the newer package would cause serious breakage if an attempt to update to Mint 19 was performed and to wait for a fixed package (or revert).

Re: Unable to boot into Linux Mint 19 64-Bit With EasyBCD 2.3 (Dual Boot Setup Windows 10 )

I never could get easyBCD to work well in a dual boot environment with Windows and Linux. The one and only time I attempted to use it to manage a dual boot configuration resulted in the loss of the entire drive with years of data lost (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.. No fresh backups before fiddling with...

Re: Update issues Mint 18.2 Cinnamon

Hmmm. We'll see how that goes. I'm running a RX460 and wanted to take advantage of the AMD offerings for their proprietary drivers.

Edited --

Again, I have no PPAs selected. The AMD driver setting is under additional repositories, not PPA.

Re: The direction I dream for Linux

... all this does not change the fact that Linux has grown enough and there are plenty of distributions. ... You just do not get it. There are way TOO many distros, DEs, package managers, APIs, etc. And little stability or backwards (or forwards) compatibility. That is why, largely, not many want t...

Noticing the same behavior after the updates this morning. Right mouseclick on desktop provides a different menu now, where as before one could update/change the desktop backgrounds. This is no longer possible.

Changing bluetooth download destination

Although I use it rarely, it is rather handy to do a quick bluetooth transfer from the phone to the notebook. However, the default destination directory (/Downloads) tends to be rather cluttered at times and only gets cleaned out a couple of times a year. I'd like to change this to a different locat...

Kudos on a great OS

I swapped out the internal wifi card in my notebook with an Intel AC 7260. Took me 30 minutes of fiddling to get the drivers to install properly in Winderz. Fired up Mint and it detected the new card upon bootup and was off to the races without a single issue. A job well done on an excellent OS. It ...

How far away from the router are you? If you move closer for a better signal strength, do you still experience the connection issue?

Went ahead and pulled the trigger on the 7260. With the existing connection speed combined with router, the 5GHz band is sufficient with the 2 data streams.

Thanks y'all. :D

For those of you that use 802.11ac with internal mini PCI-E

Which make/model card do you have installed and what are your impressions with network stability and speed? I'm planning on replacing the existing 802.11n card in my notebook with one that supports 802.11ac and am leaning towards the Intel line of wireless cards. But before I source a final solution...
