personally i'd like to see an arch based mint distribution.
Manjaro already does exactly that very well. I have been trying the Manjaro Cinnamon DE spin on my laptop, and it is excellent, noticeably faster than Mint. I still use Mint on my main desktop, as I trust the stability more.

Re: Distrowatch stats for LM?

The "best" distro does depend on what computer you're using. I've been running Mint on my Asus U47A laptop for several years. It was recently updated (fresh install actually) to 19.1. This last weekend I wanted to see what all the Manjaro hype was about, so I backed up Mint, and replaced i...

Hotz uses Ubuntu for self driving Acura

Some of us may recall George Hotz, the high school student who hacked those first iPhones to run on networks other than AT&T. That was eight years ago. Now he's up to some amazing things with AI. Read the article and watch the video . . . http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2015-george-hotz-self-d...

The 17.3 update was offered today for previous mint 17.x installations. FWIW, I've updated both my desktop and laptop machines. Both updates went smoothly.

Re: Please don't hate my for asking a ubuntu question?

No hating, just a very rude suggestion . . . Wipe: Ubuntu Install: Mint Seriously, this would be the easiest and fastest way to get what you want. It will make your sister very happy. I am assuming from your requirements, you want Linux to look a little more familiar to Windows users. If the c...

Re: Did I choose the wrong distro?

Hmmm, I don't know about VMWare, I have almost no experience of it, and I've always been suspicious about the concept. I think my problem is that I DON'T have a vanilla environment, and probably the whole environment is too contaminated with Windows, for Mint's tastes... Right now I think I'm going...

Martienne (are you a femelle visitor from the red planet? :D ), I have a couple of comments and suggestions for you. I am sorry your initial experience with Mint has been trying. It shouldn't have been. (For credentials, I have been setting up computer systems since 1983, when MS DOS was on one flop...

A major update, LibreOffice 5.0, is now available. I don't know if your issue has been addressed, but it is supposed to have been significantly improved.

Whatever. The Update Manager presented Mint 5 to me as a Level 2 Update, so it is no longer necessary to jump through hoops to get it.

Amazing photo. The more you stare at it, the more details come into view. The couple flirting on the right, the young mother showing off her baby to her fawning friends, the middle aged women relaying gossip, and the straight out of Central Casting cowpokes hanging around the trash can. All great st...

Re: What version MINT is best for Dell Optiplex 320

That screen means that you did not get to the BIOS. You need to be quicker in hitting the F2 key.

A program from killdisk.com was used to wipe the drive clean, and Killdisk leaves that little message on the drive to inform you of this fact.

Re: Will a Mint image or backup load onto a new computer?

It might be best to listen to the wise folks. Making an image, and transferring it to a new computer is also a "rigmarole", and I suggest it's maybe a more difficult one than starting over. In addition, that new clean install will not contain the baggage of a system that was forced to run ...

Re: Cannot get cinnamon live CD to boot...MDM fails

You obviously have more than ample resources to run Cinnamon, so that is not the problem. Just as a test, try another CD with a different Mint DE. Also, there is a possibility that your disk (or the ISO that created it) is defective. Your nVidia card is unlikely to be the issue.

I have an Asus U47A and have had the same problem. I have it dual booting with Windows 8.1 and Mint 17.1. Maybe this will work for you also. It did for me. In the BIOS, be sure SECURE BOOT CONTROL is DISABLED. DISABLE FAST BOOT ENABLE LAUNCH CSM DISABLE LAUNCH PXE OPROM You will have to set these la...

Looks like my thread was diverted! Sorry about the hijacking. Thanks to those who offered suggestions. Apparently 17.1 included some regressive changes. My Verbatim mouse that worked in 17 no longer works in 17.1. I looked all over for a fix, and finally gave up and bought a Logitech M325 ($20 at B...
