Replacement calendar for the panel?

Ok, first I want to say, I am talking about the very simple calendar that sits on the panel. I am not interested in a calendar app. Or calendar program. Etc... That you open up elsewhere, and has a bajillion bells and whistles. I don't want something to set reminders on. Or all the other bajillion o...

Zenity

For the first time in years,, I visited a website, and my computer completely locked up. In a bit, it unlocked enough that I could click something and wait a few minutes and something would happen. It was like playing a newer game on a really old computer. Very very slow. And some things still didn'...

Re: Black screen of seeming deadness

you spelled it wrong, just copy the code I can't just copy the code. I have to reboot to get to that prompt. A "copy" procedure doesn't last through a reboot. LOL I have to write it down by hand on a piece of paper. Reboot. Get to the prompt. Then type it all in. But you were correct. I w...

Re: Black screen of seeming deadness

find out if you have any errors in dmesg dmesg | grep -i "error\|warn\|fail" can you get to a terminal or is it completely blank? I do get to a terminal. (The entire thing is a terminal screen. In the end, I get nothing else but that.) I can't believe I got that command typed in correctly...

Re: Black screen of seeming deadness

Well, I haven't found a solution to the blank screen. But I did finally figure out how to get my data from my email program and browser into the new installation of 18.3 So I guess this is moot. I can access all the old files from the new installation. I'll probably clean it up, and delete that inst...

Re: Evolution. I don't want it synced.

Pretty sure I got it fixed. I'll be backing it up every night for a while. Would have been a bit easier if I had had a more recent backup, but even a 3 year old backup helped. Here's what I did, in simple terms, and not nerdspeak... I uninstalled evolution. Actually the term used was "completel...

Re: Evolution. I don't want it synced.

Also by the way....

Evolution has not been saving a copy of the emails.

Used to be, I just left everything that I wanted to save, in the inbox of evolution. It never disappeared.

Now, if I delete the file from the online program, it disappears from evolution, never to be found again.

Re: Evolution. I don't want it synced.

Sounds simple to me, you've set up evolution using the IMAP protocol when what you want is POP3. You can google the pros and cons of each, but basically in IMAP your email provider maintains the 'master' copy of your emails - their responsibility to make sure they are backed up. Evolution maintains...

Solved. Evolution. I don't want it synced.

Mint 18.3 Evolution 3.18.5.2 Here's the problem: When I move something on my computer, (evolution), it moves, online as well. When I delete something online, it deletes on my computer as well. Etc. I used to be able to watch emails online. Delete what I didn't want. Download what I did want. Then de...

Re: Black screen of seeming deadness

I thought perhaps your you may have received a kernel update unknowingly. Try this: when you see the grub screen press 'e' (edit) Scroll down using the arrow buttons to the line beginning 'linux' then use the right arrow to scroll to the end of 'quiet splash' backspace to remove those two words and...

Re: Black screen of seeming deadness

Try reverting to an earlier kernel--boot to the installation you are having trouble with and when the Grub menu appears use the down arrow key to highlight 'Advanced options' and press enter. In the next grub screen use the arrow buttons to highlight the next lower numbered generic kernel and press...

Solved. Black screen of seeming deadness

Ok, I've spent more than 12 hours reading "solutions" to this here, applying everything I can find, and still no gui screen after startup. Let me go back to the beginning... I was running 18.2. I had everything all set up the way I like. Firefox esr, evolution, etc. I installed redshift. (...

Turn off screensaver.

This may be the shortest and easiest tutorial, ever. LOL (Well, the tute, part, anyway. The explanation takes the most typing.) Admins, if this isn't the right place for this, please feel free to relocate it. The problem: Screensaver just doesn't seem to turn off. The screen turns off after about 10...

Linux on very first Ipad

I'm not sure where else to post this. This seems the most logical place. If it is wrong, please feel free to move it. :) I have been offered the very first Ipad. (Ipod? I don't know. I haven't actually seen it yet.) It's a tablet with wifi capability, but no cell phone. Does anyone know if I will be...

Re: update firefox in mint 18

Hi Ebere, That is strange. On my computer, Firefox ESR was updated yesterday from 45.2 to 45.3. Have you tried to update via the terminal ? Not the normal way, but I did figure it out. I did a sudo nautilus. Went to the firefox folder. Changed it's permissions. Did the update via "help" i...

Hi zorzi,

I am running firefox esr.

It won't update.

It keeps saying that there is an update available, but it can't update because of system permissions or something of the sort.
