Re: Linux Mint E17

If y'all do try to get Clem to authorize an official E17 Linux Mint, I hope you base it upon Linux Mint Debian, because there would be much less work needed so you wouldn't have to start over every 6 months.

Re: Linux Mint E17

I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition at the moment. Is there an E17 repo that would be good to add to try it out on LMDE?

What apps to shrink digital camera pictures?

I imagine GIMP would shrink digital camera pictures, but I couldn't figure out how immediately and it seemed like overkill. My digital pictures are 5-30 MB each and I would just like a quick and easy way to shrink them down to 100 KB or less each for emails? Which Linux software does this easy enoug...

Can I use the "raw" (non .deb) Nvidia drivers?

Is it ok to download and install the newest Nvidia drivers straight from the Nvidia website with the directions there? I do this for my Zenwalk and Vector partitions and it works great, but I wasn't sure if doing this (because it is not in a .deb file) would be ok for Linux Mint. It really does seem...

Re: Playing video shows green empty screen + sound only

I had the same problem in Mint 4.0, even though 3.0 was fine. It seemed that Mplayer and Totem (GStreamer) had to be fixed separately, and Compiz was the originator of both problems. I tried enabling the Compiz video playback plugin, but that didn't work. (Though it may have allowed the below to wor...

or in a terminal do "sudo wine /directory/where/the/file/is"
I've read quite a few times NOT to use sudo with wine. Wine is a user application and running sudo with it can screw up permissions or such.

Problem when 'net connection fails

I noticed a problem because I have a poor broadband connection that often fails. When it fails, things downloading don't finiish, they have to be started over. So my connection crashed while downloading through mintinstall. It wouldn't complete and so I had to shut down mintinstall. Mintinstall didn...

I want to learn Python, with which GUI? Glade, PyGTK, Wx?

I'm a non-programmer teaching myself Python. I'm curious which GUI is best to learn to go with it. Any opinions on the best resources to learn this? I'm learning the Python basics from various references at http://www.Python.org which seem good. Any opinions on Free Software Python programing projec...

I was very impressed with much of Sabayon when I installed it on my desktop. Since I've never been able to figure out/configure Compiz Fusion myself, this was great to see it work. However, I got aggressive on Portato (portage/emerge) in trying to manually update stuff. I caused the system to crash ...

I can connect, but how to autoconnect?

I'm sure there is an easier way for me to automatically log on through wireless every time I power on the laptop. Currently, I have the notorious BCM4318 wireless card. I have successfully blacklisted the BCM 43XX driver in the modprobe section and can get wireless to work. However, when I power on ...

Tuxguitar might be a good item to add

I checked the existing Mint/Ubuntu repositories, and TuxGuitar is not found by a search on Synaptic. i haven't got to use it yet, but if its ability to play Power Tab files is good, then that would be one of the major barriers for guitarists moving from Windows. (I'm such a beginner with Wine that I...

Well, here I go again. I'm running Cassandra as LiveCD to see if I can get wireless working before installing it over Bianca. I tried to follow Mstpierre's directions from the Mar 04 post above, since it worked 3 months ago for Bianca, but it doesn't work in Cassandra. mint@mint:~$ cd ~/Desktop mint...

Sounds good. I don't know if you read the WineHQ "Weekly" News, but MintInstall seems similar to another idea discussed there called Winebot. That would be a front end to Wine that would automatically configure Wine for many programs that are complex to configure, to make Wine easy for any...

does mintInstall change my repositories? Only while the software is being installed. After this is finished it puts them back the way they were. Would this mean that you would not receive updates when that program is updated, and you try to update everything through Synaptic? If so, maybe some .min...

How do I back up Evolution email?

Since I have been unable to restore my desktop Gnome Mint 2.2, I was wondering how my emails on Evolution are stored, how to save them so I can just overwrite the partition with either Gnome or KDE Mint 2.2. So further question: If I save those old emails to CD, would I be able to put them into the ...

I understand when Ubuntu makes installing codecs and stuff so easy that it doesn't matter much to have them preinstalled or not.... in installations. But for a LiveCD, no one wants to install these over and over each time one boots up from CD. IMO, this is Mint 2.2's main advantage over Ubuntu 7.04 ...
