Re: Microsoft is Doomed

Of course, but I'm merely pointing out that your assertion that all Win XP to 7 drivers and applications work on Windows 8 is incorrect, just as the implied assertion that none of them work is also incorrect.

Re: Microsoft is Doomed

FUD. Windows 7 drivers all work on 8, as do XP and w7 applications. Work, yes. Work perfectly? Not always. Skype 4.2 doesn't quite behave on Windows 8 when it starts with each session. You end up with a phantom taskbar entry that doesn't open any window when you click on it, but it will kill Skype ...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

Forgive me for asking as it may have already been asked, but how closely will Cinnamon and its forked components track changes in GNOME/GNOME Shell/Mutter from now on? Is it going to go well off on its own direction or run alongside its upstream project?

Re: Wobbly Windows.

If you install the Unity shell (which is what Ubuntu is using) then you can get wobbly windows, because Unity uses Compiz.

Re: Chromium and Chrome: Web browser, or spyware?

Ghostery blocks only known tracking scripts. NoScript blocks all scripts apart from those on a few high profile websites that are whitelisted by default. I think it can also block web bugs/tracking cookies, but I prefer to simply disable 3rd party cookies and let my browser take care of that problem...

Re: Chromium and Chrome: Web browser, or spyware?

SRWare Iron isn't worth the trouble. Apart from a custom ad blocker, the only real difference between it and Chromium is that it forcibly disables certain tracking mechanisms and pre-configures certain privacy-related settings. In Chromium these are user-configurable. What you gain is not more priva...

Re: Chromium and Chrome: Web browser, or spyware?

I have been a long time user of Chrome back in my Windows Vista and 7 days, however I have recently began to hear that Google is using Chrome (Chromium in particular) to track what people view in their web browsers. Can I get some opinions on this? What do you think? Can someone confirm that Google...

Technically it is MATÉ (note the accent), which comes from Yerba maté. Not sure why it's all uppercase though.

Re: Where is the Logic in Gnome 3 ?

Why should I, or anyone, give it time? Because if nobody gave anything time then we would be in a perpetual cycle of partially inventing the wheel. GNOME 2 did not reach the state it is in now overnight. It was brutally criticised at release, and now it is seemingly a gift from above. Personally I ...

Re: Where is the Logic in Gnome 3 ?

how do you get to the home folder when theres nothing to click on and no commands work Bring up a virtual terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F#, where # is a number from 1-6 and corresponds to tty1-6, although it can vary slightly between distros (normally tty7 is your X session). You can then remove the dire...

Re: Where is the Logic in Gnome 3 ?

If you happen to lose panels or what have you again, try removing (or renaming) some of the configuration directories in your home folder. These were .gconf and .gnome2 before, but I am certain that the MATE versions are named differently for compatibility reasons. Any modifications to the default l...

Re: IF I EVER GET MINT INSTALLED PROPERLY, WILL I BE ABLE TO

Agreed with the above. Unless you are lucky enough to be running old and popular software, or are capable of patching Wine to work well with your software, you're better off dual booting or running Windows in a virtual machine. The latter should be fine unless you need good 3D acceleration.

Re: Where is the Logic in Gnome 3 ?

To be fair, MATE is a very immature project with very few resources, even if it's forking a mature code base. Like GNOME 3, it will need time to work out the kinks.

Re: Is Linux becoming as arrogant as Apple and Microsoft?

Point taken, i might have an easier time describing the emotions it provokes rather than the technical issues that arise. I simply feel like every new release of (example) Ubuntu more restrictive than the last. As if i can't be trusted to make my own choices. In that regard, i feel like im being ta...

Re: Is Linux becoming as arrogant as Apple and Microsoft?

For starters, I think it's good to point out that Linux can't be arrogant, greedy, egotistical or religiously fanatical, because Linux is a piece of software and not a corporate entity nor a person. At best one could say that the kernel developers (many of which are not just people but also paid emp...

Re: No Google...is a no no

I used to be a big Firefox fan, but they're updating frequently now, and important addons (or extensions) oftentimes doesn't work properly, if at all (Java?). If I depended on Firefox to make a living, that matter would concern me far beyond the search engine issue. But that's only my opinion, I re...

Re: No Google...is a no no

Is there any way to override this and be allowed to use the open source FireFox web browser in the way I want? Please don't throw the "open source" term around like that. Firefox is still open source, because, you know, you can still download the source. FWIW, if you want to add additional search e...

Distrowatch rankings are based purely on hits to the distributions' Distrowatch pages (not their respective websites). There are no other factors involved.

Re: Congratulations Clem and Mint Team

Buzzkill alert! Isn't Mint on distrowatch a common entry for all variations of Mint whereas the Ubuntu family is split into separate entries? (ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu and what have you) Yes. The main edition makes up for about 85% of real usage if I remember correctly, so if you want to m...
