Re: Video of novices guide to customizing the menu panel

Thanks, Brian.
I thought your video was clear, easy-to-understand, and very informative.
Am eagerly awaiting the sequel...

Re: Jupiter OS; DEBIAN ROLLING....

If a Linux "convert" doesn't actually experience anything significantly different from Windows for the majority of the time then when something goes wrong and they need to get down and dirty they'll be so far outside of their comfort zone that they'll run back to Windows because they know...

What does xp mean? [SOLVED]

OK, so this is probably a really dumb question... On the Linux Mint Community, every member's name is listed followed by brackets containing a number and then the letters xp. I've noticed that my listing has steadily climbed from (0xp) to (21xp), but I've no idea what this means. I've tried searchin...

LMDE is definitely ok for beginners. I should know

And even if it weren't, there's a load of friendly help right here on the forum :)

Re: mintUpdate not updating!

Hi, all! I'm using LMDE and am finding that the mintUpdater doesn't appear to be working properly. I ran apt-get update and waited and a while later, I was told by mintUpdater that I had 18 updates available. I know if I use the Debian method of apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, I would ha...

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

FUD LMDE is fantastic Gosh. I had to google FUD, which I'd never come across before. Wikipedia came up with a Mexican food, a female urination device, and the concept of Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt. I presume you mean the last of these, In which case I agree. I'm very positive about LMDE; it seem...

Re: LMDE Newbie (SOLVED)

I know you marked this as solved, Wrinkly. But this is important. Install the debdelta package because it allows you to not need to download the whole new packages but just the difference between the current version in your system and the new version. sudo apt-get install debdelta Then before you u...

Re: LMDE Newbie?

That's why many frequent Debian installers use the Net Install CD. You only download the core of the O/S, everything else in installed in real-time over the net, so you never install the old-version then upgrade. It might be a better approach for Mint. It would also mean only one CD regardless of D...

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

I installed Isadora, then found that Julia had just been released, and only then discovered LMDE. As it turned out, I spent roughly a day each with Mint 9 and Mint 10. Fast and furious romances, I guess. You may boast about lovin' them and leavin' them. But the way I heard it, THEY dumped YOU.

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

The .iso file is just the one you download originally to burn to a CD/DVD. Yeah, it's going to be a nuisance doing that one download, and then catching up with thousands of updates. But it won't be different versions of the distro, it will just be different media that you use to end up with the cur...

Re: Is LMDE going to make it?

There must be 300 - 400 updates to d/l by this point. 500. I just did a fresh install on a different drive last night. :D That was EXACTLY my point when I asked the following question under LMDE Newbie: I've successfully downloaded LMDE, took about 8 hours. Then I did all the updates, which...

Re: Is MintUpdate the best way to keep LMDE up-to-date?

Wrinkly, both commands don't do the same thing. debdelta-upgrade is an 'extra' command. It doesn't install packages it just grabs them (actually grabs and builds the deltas). It can be run before apt-get (upgrade or dist-upgrade), aptitude (safe-upgrade or full-upgrade) or a graphical package manag...

Thanks for all the comments. I've now installed secipolla's sudo apt-get install debdelta followed by sudo apt-get update && sudo debdelta-upgrade and I've also run Vincent's sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and both seemed to do things without stuffing up everything ...

Thank you, Vincent, for a most comprehensive answer. There's just one teeny weeny thing that bothers me: ....Aptitude also generally handles package dependencies better than apt-get, although if you know what you're doing, either one works fine.......... As such, I recommend the process of "sud...

OK, will do. And thanks for the advice - I wish I'd known about it when I first installed LMDE: it took 5 hours for my computer to install the updates. And when it had finished, there was another pile of them to download.
