just for info - i have been totally unable to install mint 9 OR the ubuntu 10 that its derived from. Both iso`s check out fine but both crash after 3/4 distance - err no 5 - disk error. Seems to me that these new versions just dont like my ancient HDD !

i`m trying out xfce right now - now entirely sure what to expect of it but i`m trying it out solely because i dont like the main menu in the mint version of gnome! I installed xfce through the synaptic package manager. to make it work i used ctrl+alt+F1 to get out of gnome, then at the terminal prom...

just to add a little more to the speed vs windows thing - My partner runs Win XP on her lappie (celeron 1.6Ghz), i use mint 8 on the desktop (p4 2.8Ghz). We had a "race" from cold booting to see which was faster. XP loaded the gui quicker than mint but took an age to gather its wireless network etc,...

yes - current mint 8 uses x11

re: limited to 800*600 screen res. I also have a similar problem. its not gfx card or driver related, but a problem with the monitors properties not being read properly by mint on startup. My monitor can display 1024*768 but on initial startup with mint it only displays 800*600. after a few minutes ...
