Unleashing LM11 on a linux 'newb'

I have a friend who's computer suffered a horrible fate by the hands of windows' insecurity. Anyways, I have been so indulged in linux for the past few years, remembering what it is like to be a linux newb is hard for me. Personally, I've moved on to distros that require a little more work.. but I l...

Any plans to combine LMDE with KDE?

I have been a fan of Mint ever since I found it. I don't use it (anymore), but I still try to keep up to date on what the devs have been up to. I hate to say it, but the KDE releases based on Kubuntu have been pretty unsatisfactory in my opinion. No, I'm sorry; They flat out suck. (I apologize Boo, ...

Re: network, Linux to Windows

Have you set the 'Music' and other folders to be shared properly? Try right clicking on 'Music' (from the host machine) and check the Sharing Options.

Re: KDE problems after update

Mint 9 KDE isn't out yet, so that probably IS the problem. There's no easy way to fix this. I'd backup your important stuff and reinstall Mint 8 KDE and wait for the official release. Please read things carefully before making 'blind' upgrades like this. GNOME != KDE.

Re: 32 bit or 64 bit

If you have more than 4GB of RAM, use the 64-bit version, if you have less the 32-bit version is fine. You won't notice any spectacular difference with 64-bit, and you may have issues with Flash (just install the 32-bit plugin if you go 64).

Re: Aero Snap Config in Compiz isn't working :(

I just followed the instructions and it works great. I also bound it to Super+Arrow <dir>, the only thing that seems to be giving me minor problems is that it doesn't want to work if the window is maximized. For your problems, are you sure that compiz is running as your preferred window manager? EDI...

Re: ppa.launchpad.net unavaliable?

It may be the particular ppa repo you've added is no longer available. Check to make sure there is a package for the release.

Re: No logo when booting Mint 9

There's probably not an image for the resolution the boot loader is trying to boot at.

Re: PCLinuxOS Kde 2010

As usual, switching to Mint brings many welcome fixes for most problems that come inherently from Ubuntu.

Re: Request for a CD edition of Mint KDE for next version

I am in favor of a 700MB CD rather than a 1GB or 4GB DVD. Give me a minimal system (any flavor) I'd prefer to customize it to my liking anyways.

Re: Mint 8 Main hibernating and not waking

I'm not 100% sure if this will fix anything, but you can check some things: Is your swap drive at least the size of your system memory (RAM)? It is a known problem that hibernation/suspend requires at least the amount of swap space as RAM that you have. If it isn't, you will need to resize your part...

Re: 3rd party repo doesn't show up

You probably forgot to add the gpg key. This is to verify the source of the software you are downloading. Try running this: wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/sun_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - As it tells you to do on the VB downloads page http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Lin...

Re: Linux Mint 9 - Strange problem on Acer TM 8004LMI

You can make this a permanent change by editing /etc/default/grub and adding it to:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=" i8042.nomux=1"

Re: Question about sudo

From nautilus you can open the directory the skin is in by right clicking on the directory and Open as Administrator then copy it to the location. Also, you could run gksu nautilus --browser. gksu is like sudo, but for graphical apps.

Re: Monitor out of range

Well, I'd try this.. once you install the nVidia driver on a fresh install, BEFORE YOU REBOOT.. run in a terminal: sudo nvidia-xconfig Then, run: sudo nvidia-settings Set up the resolution you want (although it may princess at you because you haven't rebooted yet), I think you can still set it. Re: Paying to use Mint

For the above noted reasons, I voted that it has to be free. I have never donated to Linux Mint, although if I could afford the few bucks every now and then I would.. I do however, give back to the community in equally valuable ways by donating my time to helping people here on the forums, or in IRC...
