Re: Distrowatch Mint vs. Fedora

Same here - while also agreeing with the above post that Distrowatch is possibly the *worst* way to measure popularity and usage (I can go into more detail if needed), Mint, Mepis, Ubuntu proper, Mandriva, Zenwalk, and any number of others would all be better alternatives for that crows, IMO.

Re: Mint Debian

Wow - if you can tame Sid GNOME to a Mint-worthy level, you are indeed skilled ;-)

Any thought to how you're going to certify the bi-weekly updates? That was my stopping point.

Hello again

Hello all,

Kind of been on a walk-about. Soothing feelings, trying new things, etc...

But you know, it's funny.

In the end, you come back to Mint ;-)

Re: Mint Debian

I really like the idea of this project. I, for one, am a huge Debian fan and run pure Debian Testing on my main workstation. It's really nice having a "rolling" release cycle instead of having to do dist-upgrade or wipe/re-install every 6 months. I actually had Gnome 2.22 before it was released in ...

Re: What distro to try?

Heh. If you actually think there's a *useable* synergy between the uncompleted and dead Darwin project and OSX, then PLEASE, by all means, be my guest and run it ;) "Letting Apple know thier flagship OS was never completed", in reference to an end-usable Darwin project, is an absurd strawman. ...

Try going to the root, and then opening the /mnt or /media folders, and opening the corresponding drives from there

Re: What distro to try?

Sabayon is a LiveDVD, not a CD. You could try getting the slimmed-down version (which I'd actually recommend, I used to be a Sabayon advocate) plus it's gentoo so you're bound to get a lot of experience through it, but... there's not that much difference, really. It's just a big red mint with the f...

Re: Hardy Heron

Indeed, that's what's amazing about Clem's work with any given Ubuntu cycle - it's *always* missing the Ubuntu bugs. I don't know how he does it, but it's bloody amazing. Ubuntu Gutsy was a disaster. Daryna? Pure Genius. *That's* the magic of Mint ;-)

Re: Hardy Heron

Hardy has some very serious bugs. I tested Hardy on three machines and all ended up with a screen full of Network Manager errors. I submitted one of the two bug reports pertaining to this issue. The developer's seem to have no idea what is causing the problem, the bugs status is "Low" and one devel...

Re: Hardy Heron

Hmmm. Don't get the problems. Running with no compiz, otherwise everything normal. No problems at all, using a whopping 223 MB ram with the Human-Murrine theme. Not a single hitch here. FF3 working fine.

Re: Guild wars anyone?

Yes. Make sure Compiz is turned off, and make sure you put the -dx8 switch in the .exe ;) If that doesn't work, next put -noshaders. The -dx8 switch fixed me right up!

Re: Exiting times for us distro hoppers!

Mandriva 2008.1 is the only distro that has installed *perfectly* right out of the box. After the cd install, I had DVD's and MP3's playing, nvidia driver automatically running, compiz with the cube *and* no window distortion, you name it. Superb. Strangely, it still isn't for me, personally. But I'...

Re: Fedora 9 Preview Comparison

I just got 62 updates to Hardy, which really sucks. I had just been asked by a freind of mine to write a review for Hardy for thier Linux site, and I got the updates in the middle, which *really* borked my system. Right in the middle of a very positive review, no less  I had to email him and te...

Re: Fedora 9 Preview Comparison

Exploder - have you checked upstream to see if the floppy drive bug is a bug in the newer Gnome versions, if it seems to be hitting cross-distro?

And I agree, a Fedora-based Mint CE would be "teh pwn", as the kids say 8)

All you have to do is to enable the livna.org repo. It's no different than having to enable the medibuntu repo for Ubuntu/Mint ;-)

"Name something you use day to day that requires access to your 4 GB of RAM?" - lakehousetech VirtualBox. I'm studying for the MCSE and Linux+ so I've set up a virtual network with a number of servers and clients. Even if I limit the RAM per machine, they chew up a bunch of RAM. True, this isn't a ...
