Re: Turn Ubuntu 10.04 into Mint 9?

You could try adding the mint repository and add the appropriate packages, however it would also mean you'd need to reinstall and remove a bunch of software. There's too many packages to really be able to say which ones you'd need to remove/reinstall.. so yeah the EASY way is to backup your /home di...

GNOME Panel bug.. here's a new one...

I was in the gnome desktop and the X server randomly crashed on me again. I logged back in and now my top taskbar looks like this: http://i46.tinypic.com/iqd6hz.jpg !?!? running: pkill gnome-panel does fix it, but come on.. really? I didn't even make changes. I'm so angry at this GNOME release. X cr...

Re: Panel issue

After you make changes to any panels open a terminal window and type: pkill gnome-panel

Usually this will reload your taskbar(s) and save them properly between boots.

Re: Scratchbox install failure,,,,

Get dropbox and a dropbox account. Upload the log to your dropbox account and put the link in your original post. I can't guarantee anybody will be able to help you since it's not officially supported software. You may want to ask on the community forums for the software or try googling the same pro...

Re: Hanging after login

Ok, so the Live CD boots to the desktop (mint 9) but you're having problems after you install it? Can you get to the desktop once it's installed? Are you just complaining about the delay?

If you can get logged in, type in a terminal:

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail
and paste up the results

try deleting the entry from your network manager and reboot. It should be eth0, not auth0.

Re: Need help with changing Splashscreen and using GDM Theme

Unfortunately there is no working replacement for GDM2Setup. The official GNOME documentation doesn't even tell you how you would customize your login screen. I was trying to figure it out earlier today, but they've built GDM2 almost in a way that they don't want you to change it (or figure it out)....

Re: Compiz Grid -- Not Resizing the Way I Want

I always found the grid plugin pretty poorly designed. I don't think there's really a way to configure it with the plugin itself. You can use compiz to modify window size/placement with a program called wmctrl. Because I don't really know a lot about it myself, I'll redirect you to a starting point....

sudo ifconfig eth0 down
Will stop the eth0 device.
sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop
Will stop all networking.

Re: Disk Check at startup taking - forever ...

Unfortunately, I've had this problem too. I have canceled the checks as they start.. If you want to workaround it the 'sort of' fast way is: boot up from a LiveCD or LiveUSB, open a terminal and make sure you've not mounted any of your hard drives . From the command line, run: $ sudo blkid /dev/sda1...

GNOME Panels (Getting them to show and stay put!)

A lot of people have had problems with the GNOME panels in LM9/Ubuntu 10.04.. They either don't appear when you create them, or they will forget applets you place in them. Here is an easy workaround which doesn't require a reboot. For example: Add a new panel.. (nothing will show). Open a terminal: ...

I prefer using the gnome-colors icons icons (built from source). It usually gets rid of most of the Ubuntu branding.
