Re: (SOLVED) 5.1 Profile Reverting (no subwoofer...)

* happy face *

Guess I never actually started the pulseaudio daemon... yeah, that would probably help.

So if it wasn't running already, what's the default for Chrome / Youtube??

Re: (SOLVED) 5.1 Profile Reverting (no subwoofer...)

* sad face *

I was so pumped when I found this thread tagged "solved." I tried the proposed solution, no dice. I tried restarting afterwards, but I'm still having the same problem. Is there another setting I have to enable somewhere?

Chrome video fullscreen broken

In Chrome, when I click the fullscreen button in Youtube, the browser window "blinks" and fullscreen mode fails to load. In Firefox it works fine, so I'm guessing it's a problem with the Chrome flash plug-in. I did not have this problem until just before the weekend. I'm guessing a new upd...

Re: Failed to fetch... http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/m

One thing I'll mention, is that not all the same updates were available on the mirror as the ones in the original packages.linuxmint.com ... But I'm sure that it's just a one or two day delay, and I don't think that will make a huge difference in my life.

Re: Failed to fetch... http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/m

So if I wanted to use the one from Waterloo (Canada), I click on the link and get http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/linuxmint/

How do I turn that into a repository entry? Just replace packages.linuxmint.com with mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/linuxmint ?

Failed to fetch... http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/maya

I've been having troubles updating for the past week or so. Some of the updates go fine, but a lot of the downloads fail. Now it looks like there are two repositories causing problems... I'm running Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon 64-bit. Here's the error message I get: GPG error: ftp://ftp.deb-multimed...

Re: Blank Screen at Login

Eventually I was able to get it working by plopping in a spare video card, installing the NVIDIA driver (current wouldn't download, so I got the 176 version), and then putting back the NVIDIA video card. Which is all fine and good if you're using a PC and you have a spare video card lying around. Wh...

Re: Login to Campus Domain with existing username

I haven't tried anything yet, having video problems that are stopping me from even seeing what's on the screen :P So a user would login to the machine and then SSH somewhere? Problem is, there isn't another computer for them to SSH into. All I want is for them to be able to login to this machine usi...

Login to Campus Domain with existing username

I'm a University student and I've just installed Linux Mint on one of our office computers. The way the rest of the computers on campus are setup is that users can use their NSID (network services ID) and password to login to any computer on campus, without a local account being setup for them on th...

Blank Screen at Login

Linux Mint 9, 64-bit Gnome DVD Booted liveCD, worked fine, had video. Installed Mint. Rebooted. Monitor goes into power saving mode after leaving Grub. I can hear the login "ping" so I hit enter and type my password, and I hear the startup sound. So I can tell it's running. But there's no ...

Re: What is $HOME and why would I install a program there?

Oh! I think I know why I was confused... I was in root terminal, because I figured that'd be easier than doing everything prefixed with a sudo. So is "/root" the $HOME folder for root? When I "cd .." out of $HOME as root, it brought me to "/" and when I "cd root&qu...

Re: Which Netbook?

I have the 9" Acer Aspire One. I have small hands, so I love the small keyboard, I actually type faster on it than a full-size. The tiny screen can be problematic for spreadsheets, but it's adequate. Balancing weight vs features was my biggest concern, I wanted something I could throw in my bac...

What is $HOME and why would I install a program there?

(I tried searching for this in the forums and Google, but the search ignores the "$" and tells me that "home" is too common to search for alone) I'm trying to install a program and the first instruction is: if retrieved as tarball: $ cd $HOME $ tar zxf python-ase-3.4.0.1574.tar.g...

Thanks! Have to admit, while the accent is crucial, it sure is a pain when logging on to new computers :)

Well, I'm stubborn and I really liked Software Center's sub-categories in science, so I tried it anyways...

No dice :(

It installed, but it refused to run:
module = __import__(distro_id, globals(), locals(), [], -1)
ImportError: No module named LinuxMint
Oh Well.

Re: Some Ubuntu programs unavailable

Oh! Sweet! Gelemental was it!! Thank you for that! I still wonder why searching for "Periodic Table" in mintinstall doesn't bring up gelemental, when the menu-name for it is exactly "Periodic Table" hmm, confusing... I had to install it to realize they were the same thing. That c...

Re: Some Ubuntu programs unavailable

I did find gperiodic, but that's not the one I'm looking for. I know it sounds silly... a periodic table is a periodic table right? Well, not exactly. To a chemist, that's like saying "Linux is Linux"... But despite the similarities between Mint and Ubuntu, you're all here and not with Ubu...

Some Ubuntu programs unavailable

There are some packages I had in Ubuntu that I can't find in Mint. In Ubuntu's Software Manager, the "Science' category was sub-divided into Chemistry, Math, Biology, etc. And under Chemistry was a great app simply called "Periodic Table" This program isn't listed in Mint's Software M...
