Kernel lockup when writing to USB
I've had an intermittent problem for a long time now with writing files to my EXT3-formatted USB3 hard disk. Sometimes the system hard-locks while doing so. And I mean hard -locks. There's no way to recover other than the power button. In the last two days the problem has gone from intermittent to c...

Re: Login screen with face selector
First, let me note that I also fell victim to the ".desktop.desktop" problem, so if anyone else has trouble making gdm themes work in mdm, open a terminal and do a full "ls" of your files! Now on a related question: is there any way within MATE to set the users' face pictures? Or...

Re: MDM - Have User List Displayed
Bump to say thanks to Arlos70 for his solution. I punched that into the default MDM login window theme and finally got the face browser. It's pretty fugly compared to LM9's equivalent but at least it's there now.

Re: MATE vs Xfce vs Cinnamon DEs for long-term install
I choose MATE as my default desktop due to the ease of configuration and use. For me, I don't need all kinds of stuffola flying around my workspaces. Also, what I can do in a couple of mouse clicks in MATE seems either impossible or an overly complicated task in Cinammon. I'll second this. I played...

Re: Install Wine on Linux Mint 13 MATE 64 bit
First of all, After installing Wine, it does not create its own entry in the menu. It is just dropped under system tools or so. Under Ubuntu (10.04.3 LTS) Wine had its own entry under the application menu. It's wierd that Wine does this under Mint... I saw this too. All the Wine menu items end up i...

Re: Have you upgraded to Mate 1.4? Have you had any problem
I upgraded to Mate 1.4 last night and didn't notice any immediate problems. One caveat for anyone who wants to do this: the mate repository is (currently) SLOW . We're talking almost dial-up-internet slow. It took over 20 minutes to download all the packages. So go make yourself a cup of coffee when...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon?
In my quick experimentation with the Live DVDs, I'm leaning toward Mate. It felt like an easier learning curve than Cinnamon, coming from the GNOME2 world. Just something simple like adding a top panel - Mate does it in a few clicks, while Cinnamon requires a restart (say what? In 2012 I have to res...

Re: No GRUB Install During Maya Install
Wow, I ran into a similar problem way back with LM9 (I haven't installed LM13 yet). Grub said it installed, but just plain didn't. The only thing I was doing differently from a default install, was trying to install Grub into a partition instead of the MBR (I was running a different boot manager at ...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments
I am still a Mint 9 user, since it is an LTS and I have no interest in installing/upgrading every 6 months. I haven't decided to what DE I will move when Mint 13 comes out but it will be one of Cinnamon, Mate, or KDE. I've yet to try Cinnamon or Mate. I did try KDE 4.x in its early days and loathed ...

Firefox Mint-branded Google search page

Stock Mint 9 Xfce here . . is your's the same web address as my picture shows ? Wait, we're talking about two different things. I mean the right-click "Search Google for.." Firefox context menu, when you select something on a page. A vanilla Firefox takes you to an ordinary Google page co...

Re: How To: Remove Mint Search Completely
I do not see how anybody who comes to Mint for the free nature of the product (and the freedom of the product) could ever begrudge using a Mint branded customised search engine if that is what it takes to help Mint grow and develop. Because the Mint Google search customizations are inferior to a re...

Re: Mint/XP integration with virtualbox
You could try right-clicking on the Virtualbox tab and selecting "Always on top". I don't know if that will work the way you want though. I only played around with Virtualbox's "integrated" mode a couple times as it felt kind of.. freaky.

Re: Why won't grub stay bootable?!
Sorry I never got back to this, I was chasing it down on the Ubuntu forums and had no better luck there. Bottom line is, I finally did have to install grub to the MBR. I had been using BootItNG as my boot & partition manager and I didn't want to overwrite that in the MBR. Grub, however, simply w...

Why won't grub stay bootable?!
OK, this is my first day with Linux Mint and I'm about this close to making it my last . I installed grub2 to my root partition rather than my MBR. Every single time I reboot Mint, that partition goes unbootable! Meaning I have to reinsert the live DVD, run "sudo grub-install ...", to make...

Re: Grub2 information & Links.
Hi all, I just installed Linux Mint 9 today (first time Mint user, I had been using Ubuntu but the ham-fisted UI changes in 10.04 disgust me) and ran into a serious problem with the Grub installation. Namely: it didn't. It just plain didn't install. I told it to install to /dev/sda7 (my / partition)...
