Re: Linux Mint 17.1 “Rebecca” Cinnamon released!

Aaaahhh! Couldn't help myself. I have no patience. Have upgraded 17 to 17.1. Smooth as a babies' bum. As always clonezilla is your friend before 'stuffing' around with your installation. Only two extensions that were incompatible with 17.1. As always Looking Glass pointed them out; removed and all f...

Re: Linux Mint 17.1 codenamed 'Rebecca'

Hey all. Downloaded and had a play with Rebecca........ Can't fault it. Well done team. Only one thing........... is there a plan any time to allow us to by default have a window centre on opening? You know the bigger the screen - and let's face it all our screens are getting bigger - the more annoy...

Works on Cinnamon; but I don't understand why this facility would be needed??? I'm happy to use the 'normal' close options.

Re: 32-bit PAE or 64-bit

I still use 32 bit on my main computer as I have to use Citrix to access my work server and 64 bit has too many issues with the install........... still!
Will continue to use 32 bit untill this is fixed by the boffins.

Re: Can anything be done with this netbook? <SOLVED>

I suspect this netbook, http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000ZNSAA4/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that I purchased in 2008, can serve only one purpose (a paperweight) but what the hell. As you can see the specs are pretty limiting (512 MB of RAM, a mere 2GB harddrive). On top of th...

Re: 17 much slower, than previous LTS

I have compared relative speeds of how quickly or otherwise 17 reacts to commands compared to Mint 10 and Mint 13. 17 is downright sluggish and tardy on the same computer. It sort of 'thinks about it' and mulls over each command before executing it. Anyone else noticed? Hey gone from 15 with cinnam...

Re: Driver Issue

Try the live DVD of Mint 17 (better using the later version with the latest kernel for new stuff). I'm sure it will work fine. Then choose to install. Of course the W7 drivers supplied with the motherboard won't work with Linux. No windows drivers - except for some wifi - will work with Linux. Linux...

Re: How to copy files from one hard drive to another? SOLVED

Boot with a live disk. Open terminal and type: sudo fdisk -l (this will show all your disks and partitions) Then...... cp -pdRv /home/al /media/al/My_Book/ Where 'al' (my home directory) will be changed to 'your home directory' to copy and 'My_Book' the disk or partition you wish to copy to. These c...

Re: Windows 8 dual boot not working

Although I have no first hand experience with win 8, in every forum I read, win 8 does not play well with multi-boot systems. My sugestion is to have two disks and have win 8 up and running on one disk first. Once you have it ready, plug the power cable in your second disk (this is so the win8 insta...

Re: Resized Windows 7 Partiton does not work

Ahh you misunderstand my post. Each HD has a GRUB install except for a Windows HD of course, but the first HD's GRUB installation will find each OS installation and setup a multi choice list. Each drive can still be independantly booted if you wish.

Re: Resized Windows 7 Partiton does not work

With the price of hard disks these days and the fact that most of us have perfectly good (but smaller) HDs hanging around, don't go installing Linux and Win on the same disk in different partitions. For those with their heads in the game (very experienced) this may not be a problem. But to the avera...

Re: How to rename a user (user login name)?

I have never tried this, but it should be as simple as /Administration/User Accounts. Unlock using your root password and change the name on the account. Linux should do the rest. But as I said; I havn't done it this way, so confirm this from someone who has. I know it can be done via terminal and I...

Re: How to update Mint v14 to v15 through UpdateManager?

This is fraught with danger and troubles. Linux doesn't play nicely this way. I tried it once and things did not go well. Many of your origional settings will (may) have an unexpected affect on your new installation. Try this link. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=136933#p730815

Re: Make a shortcut to folder in Nemo

If I understand your question correctly, just drag the folder you want into the left panel to create a 'bookmark' or open the folder you want in the left panel then open 'bookmarks' from the menu bar and click 'add bookmark'. You can reorder the bookmarks in the left panel by draging them with your ...

Re: List of Keybindings, hard to find.

install 'dconf editor' (not installed by default) and search for 'keybindings'. You will find there are many entries most tied to certain operations.
Section 'desktop' and 'wm' have most keybindings for window operations.
Hope this helps.

Re: [SOLVED (ISH)]cinnamon 1.6 right click open with custom

Easiest way to achieve this with cinnamon is to right click on a file then in properties you can associate any program or several programs to open the file and set one as default.
As with most things Linux, you just have to know where to look.

Re: New to Linux - First Steps After Installation?

Clonezilla is a good friend to have. Just Google it and download and burn to disk. Use this to backup partitions to a usb disk. If you play with Linux you will end up 'borking' it for sure because Linux leaves the choices and options up to you. This can lead to issues. I have borked my system severa...
