Re: making the switch - ubuntu mint or debian mint

Debian based distro's are lighter on resources and are considered generally faster and more responsive than ubuntu and ubuntu based distro's. So, especially for an old machine, debian as a base, is highly recommended. I do not think that Deb-based distros are more suited for techies. But if you want...

Re: SolusOS RC1

Great news, Ikey. There are always two questions: find the best compromise between stability and new packages and which distro is suitable for a new user. With the latter, i am not referring only to the "ser-friendly" moto, but to the fact that they are many users -and potential- users, th...

Re: No updates?

Oh. Indeed. It's unusually quiet here though. Where are all the people who were angry about LMDE being "a sleeping distro"? Maybe they 've changed their repositories or they move to other distributions :D UP 3 entered incoming in August the 30th. Almost six months since then. That fact is...

Re: No updates?

And there is also aptosid's fork: http://siduction.org/  The first stable release came Dec. the 30th @ zerozero - you 're right, it would be an "interesting complication" especially for users running gnome side by side with xfce. So, the only, even more complicated solution...

Re: No updates?

At least the security updates for LMDE XFCE could have been released. i saw this idea several times already: "why we, xfce users have to wait because of the problems with the gnome ed.?" and it all boils down to misinformation: - although lmde-xfce is a separate ed, it uses exactly the sa...

Re: No updates?

I've had a growing suspicion that Testing may be the worst of all worlds as far as a distro base, being behind Stable on security updates, and behind on software updates from Sid. I know there are over 800 updates waiting right now in Testing, and in 6 months Wheezy will be frozen. I'm not convince...

Re: Mint 13 XFCE

In my opinion, lack of developers is the main problems of Xfce project. Speaking in general, it is really nice having so many options available (different desktops, window managers, distributions) but freedom must comes with co-operation. Better co-operation is what is needed, not new desktops (mate...

Re: LMDE FAQ

Great work guys ! :D May i suggest to add the new mintupdate-debian among the other fundamental tools? Of course, it plays an important role for update packs but also offers a nice and handy way to upgrade your system whatever are your sources.list. Another program that helped me sometimes while run...

Re: Mint 13 XFCE

Eventhough LXDE and XFCE are developed keeping in mind older hardware, still they can be used as a main DE in modern hardware. Why can’t they? Amen! I totally agree with that :D Some people think xfce as a poor man's desktop, something that you use in secondary, old machine. But i do prefer xfce, e...

Re: Mint 13 XFCE

kijin, i have not tried mate, i am ignoring it's state, so i find your point "either XFCE or MATE, not both" very interesting. In such a dilemma, the obvious answer is Xfce: They don't have to support then the gnome 2 libraries, and also, there is not any need to re-invent the wheel. That ...

Re: Mint 13 XFCE

As i had said several times, i prefer debian as a base, for several specific reasons, but every user has his/hers own preferences, so maybe it's better to leave it here and speak only as a Xfce-fan. Xfce is not Mint's flagship desktop. Mint's team has not a lot of members. If i am right, Clem has st...

Re: Which version of Mint are forum users using, and why?

On the other hand, it is not quit logic to admiring the building when there is only the foundation. Regardless how talented is the architect, the whole construction may end up in a fiasco. But that 's about taste. Personally, i prefer xfce than gnome2 in any case, openbox is also one of my big favou...

Re: Square wheels or what to upate ?

Hi longtom. The sources are always listed in the text file /etc/apt/sources.list If you want more frequent updates, you can edit it to the following form: deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import deb http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free deb http://secur...

Re: LMDE a sleeping distro?

What things bothered/bothering me with UP's story and this thread? First thing, disappointment. I am one of the first LMDE users and when update packs announced i saw them as something similar with Debian' s cut. My belief was that UP's had the potential to attract more and more users, targeting to ...

Re: LMDE a sleeping distro?

Good to know it, I'm back to the ground now. I understand that most users are happy with the ubuntu based editions. My experience is different. I'm an early (and happy) LMDE adopter defecting from years of (pure) ubuntu madness, so for me Mint *is* LMDE but it's just me. I hope LMDE will never be d...

Re: LMDE a sleeping distro?

If LMDE a strolling distro I think its legs are broken. It would appear that the Mint team already bit off more than it can chew since it seems anytime there is trouble with the main version everything else gets left to rot. I have to agree with many of the previous post Mint hasn't delivered what ...
