Re: Mint 18 Blank DvD not detected

Thanks so much. That could solve the mystery, if as indicated the drive is read only. It was an old (but not ancient) 64 bit Thinkpad I bought. Since my really old (2009) 32bit Dell Latitude had a functioning read&write DvD drive, it didn't occur to me that anything made later would only have a ...

Re: Mint 18 Blank DvD not detected

SORRY - HUMBLE PIE SERVED IN DISH.

Maybe it is a hardware problem as booting the laptop in Windows 7 exhibits exactly the same problem ie reading from but not writing to the optical drive.

Bah, who uses CD or DvD for data storage anyway nowadays....

Re: Mint 18 Blank DvD not detected

Well K3B doesn't see the blank DvD either. Useful to know I can use it in Cinnamon though. Thanks!

Re: Mint 18 Blank DvD not detected

I've never had any problem with this brand before. Xfburn doesn't see it. I've not tried K3B as it's KDE only isn't it, and I'm using Cinnamon. I'm into my fifth Mint Distro and the problems are NEVER hardware related, in my experience. It's always a software problem, and usually some kind soul has ...

Mint 18 Blank DvD not detected [SOLVED]

Believe me, I've checked out many threads on this issue, and as often the case with these things there are a hundred different suggestions but no definitive answer. I'm simply trying to back up some data on DvD. However, the file system simply won't detect the blank DvD, although it will see previou...

Re: Bluetooth - general question

No, loading Blueman was the first thing I did. On Google I found some people (like yourself) who were successful, plenty of others like me who weren't. I find this is often the case with Linux Software/Drivers - it's almost as though each individual person's machine has a mind of its own! Woo, scary...

Bluetooth - general question

There are lots of people who seem to have problems with Bluetooth in Mint, and I'm no exception. It worked fine in 14, pretty useless in 17, and now 18 is no better. It's no big deal for me - I will wire to speakers, and if necessary to file transfer I will go through the admittedly cumbersome proce...

Mint 18

I've just installed 18 and am currently running two laptops, one with Mint 17, and this one with 18. A couple of irritants: (1) The keyboard layout says it's UK, but it isn't. I can't get the @ symbol to be where it should be ie the shifted 2. I have to use the shifted ' (which means to get " I...

Re: 64 bit non UEFI laptops

Is that any good? I might use it on an old Garmin I have (the new one came with a 'lifetime updates' from Garmin). Does it have Western Europe on Openstreetmaps?

Re: 64 bit non UEFI laptops

I guess the 2x2 config means that to upgrade to 8gb I'd need to buy 2x4gb sims, and maybe sell the existing 4 x 2gb sims I would have to offset the cost. The supplier offers and upgrade to 8gb for an extra £45. You can Vivaldi on 32 bit, which is Chrome-based, but I take your point. I already have a...

Re: 64 bit non UEFI laptops

That Thinkpad looks a good option. The one I've seen online comes with 4gb as standard, but I would like to use the 2x2gb ram in Old Faithful. Is the 4gb config in the machine I'm looking at likely to be 2x2gb or 4x1gb? I presume it DOES have 4 ram slots? The advert does offre upgrade to 8gb (at £45...

64 bit non UEFI laptops

I think the time has come to retire my 32 bit Dell. I have a new Windows laptop, but I am totally fed up with trying to get it to dual boot with stability (I have had to reinstall Windows 8 twice), so I am looking to buy a secondhand 64 bit laptop which still uses MBR/BIOS rather than UEFI. The seco...

Re: Mono laser printer recommendation

Rather an old thread this, but for what it's worth about 18 months ago I ended up buying a Brother DCP-7055 which was on offer in PC World. So far - touch wood - it has behaved immaculately on Mint 17, even letting me run down a cartridge to slight fading (I'm still on the original cartridge, though...

Re: PDF Conversion

Which element of Libre Office? For my purposes putting a jpeg into Write or Calc then exporting (even if it did result in a reasonably sized pdf) is not really satisfactory. What I'm looking for is a dedicated application which bypasses CUPS. How do the online converters work?
