Re: Minecraft For Kids Summer

Have you upgraded from Java7 to Java8? The latest Minecraft update requires Java8.

I followed these instructions to upgrade to Java8 on my system. I hope it doesn't break your system!

Re: Broadcom BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller

Try this. Go to the Driver manager and see if any wireless drivers are installed. If yes, then uninstall them and close the driver manager program. Then open Synaptic and search for and install firmware-b43-installer. You may then need to restart your computer. Let us know if it works.

Re: Sharing data folders from /home with a Windows partition

Chris, I don't think the first two replies realized that you only want to move your data partitions and keep your home folder with all of the configuration files on the ssd drive. I routinely create symlinks to to link my Linux data folders over to the corresponding folders on the Windows ntfs parti...

You can configure the Whisker menu in xfce to move the search box and power button to the bottom of the menu. That's what I do.

Re: One Overly Happy New Guy- Please Read!

Hello Greg2908, I too have a Dell Optiplex 745 desktop that I got for cheap when a local school district was selling off "obsolete" equipment. I upgraded the RAM (a good score on Craigslist) and added an Nvidia video card from the Goodwill recycled electronics store here in Austin. The computer work...

Consider using Minitube, which lets you watch youtube videos without using flash, or adding a video downloader extension to your browser and downloading the youtube videos to your harddrive and watching them locally.

Re: Xfce booting from USB

I'm confused about your situation. Did you install Mint xfce to the hard drive of your netbook, or are you running xfce from a live usb stick (where you lose all saved information when you reboot), or are you running xfce from a persistent install on a usb (where Mint xfce was installed onto the usb...

Re: What is considered a "modern processor" to run LM today?

Like karlchen says, there are other things to consider besides just the processor. That being said, I have an old Dell desktop with a Core 2 Duo E6400 at 2.1Ghz that runs great, but I did make some modifications to it. I installed Mint xfce instead of the heavier Cinnamon or KDE environments. I upgr...

Re: How to choose and install wifi driver? Inspiron 1501

treehouse, in your post from Wednesday you said:

The only match for "b43" in that file is:

Code: Select all
# replaced by b43 and ssb.
blacklist bcm43xx

That looks to me like the wireless card is blacklisted. Try putting a # in front of the line blacklist bcm43xx

Re: Wireles Does Not Work on Dell Inspiron E-1505

I don't know if it's possible for the router to turn off one of its frequencies, but try this. Connect to the router using an ethernet cable, go to the routers web page, and see if the router is using the 2.4 GHz frequency. I have an E1505 and I'm pretty sure the laptop cannot pick up the 5 GHz freq...

When you try to boot from the Linux dvd, do you get to the grub screen where you can choose your boot options, and after that the blank screen appears, or does the blank screen appear before you ever see grub?

This may sound dumb, but try it with the USB stick in different USB ports. I have a laptop that only boots from USB from one of the USB ports.

Re: program or any way to force boot off a usb thumbdrive

Right after you press the power button there is a key you press that will open a "one time boot menu" screen that allows you to select which drive to boot from. For Dell computers you press F12. You can google what key to press for your brand of computer. Make sure the usb stick is plugged in before...

Re: WiFi can't connect problem

Try this.

Connect to internet using the wired connection. Go back to the driver manager and uninstall the Broadcom STA driver. Open Synaptic and install the following two packages: b43-fwcutter and firmware-b43-installer. Restart your computer and see if wireless works.

Re: Installing on reformatted, no OS drive

Here are a couple of things to consider. As old as that machine sounds, it probably requires a 32 bit OS, not a 64 bit. You didn't say which distro and version you downloaded. Verify that the OS you downloaded is 32 bit. The laptop probably also does not support physical address extension (PAE). See...

Try changing some of the settings within minecraft. Start minecraft, start playing, then press F3 to see your frame rate (it will be the second line, a number followed by fps for frames per second). Then escape back out to the title window and go to "Options" then "Video Settings". Change Graphics t...

Re: Switching between DE's (XFCE-->KDE) and distro's

If you want to be trying out different distros, the best way is to keep your data on a separate data partition and install your distros to other partitions. You can then link to and access your data from the different distro installs. Take a look at this tutorial: http://community.linuxmint.com/tuto...

Re: No Operating System! Linux Trying To Boot From HDD

I agree that it sounds like a boot order issue. Note that you want to edit the boot order in the bios and then save it, rather than the one-time boot option. I say that because with my Dell laptop, if I press F12 on startup, I get to a screen where I can choose the boot device just for that current ...
