Thanks for your suggestion. I have always used Bleachbit and never had any issues. Why would Linux offer Bleachbit if it creates problems? I use Bleachbit once a week which refreshes the OS and it runs faster.

I fixed it simply by doing a clean with Bleachbit.

It seems to have worked! By exiting Chromium WITHOUT any running tabs the machine shuts down properly.

I'll keep trying various things. I did keep previous distros (2 partitions) which I mount specifically when looking for files in Home. Just had an idea: shutting down from a workspace without any tabs running? Could that make a difference? Perhaps just a silly thought...!

While not a solution to your issue, for future instances, while holding down the Alt key, press SysRq , then r e i s u , then b to Reboot or o to Shutdown. I have just read the following from Megatrend: BIOS updates will not make your computer faster, they generally won't add new features you need, and they may even cause additional problems.

The problem won't go away. It freezes on shutdown (see above image) and I have to shut down manually. It has never happened with Sylvia which was running beautifully without any issues. Can anybody suggest a cure? I would be most grateful.
