Re: Poll: Desktop environments

I can only imagine that those of you who have slated gnome3 have either not even bothered to configure it beyond the default... Good defaults are very important. With Gnome 2 (especially with the Mint flavor of it) I didn't have to worry if desktop settings will be OK if someone creates a new user....

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

...how necessary it will be in the near future to keep your hand held, television, and desktop devices in sync... It may be convenient or even useful in many cases, but it will never be useful, and certainly not necessary , for everyone or in every situation. ...fear of progression and development....

mintMenu needs python-pyinotify => reduced CPU usage

mintMenu falls back to a rather inefficient way of monitoring filesystem changes in the absence of the pyinotify Python module. This causes mintMenu to produce a small but not insignificant CPU load continuously. This matters especially on laptops on battery power. Installing the python-pyinotify pa...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

I've been installing and recommending Linux Mint (main edition with Gnome 2) since version 9 LTS to many people who were new to Linux. Linux Mint with Gnome 2 has been hands down the best "just works" distro that I'm not afraid to give to newbies. After the arrival of the unholy mess called Gnome 3,...

Re: Multilingual and "fat" edition of Mint 9 created

I've added a few more packages and customizations so that more things just work out of the box in the live session. New packages include Bluefish, Brother printer drivers, Claws Mail, Gnumeric, mencoder, Moovida, PuTTY, Subdownloader, and quite a few command line utilities. The ISO is still below 2 ...

Re: Multilingual and "fat" edition of Mint 9 created

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It's completely understandable that the Mint project wishes to protect their image and I don't want to interfere with that, especially since they're doing a great job for which I'm thankful. However, rebranding would be a big task and I cannot devote a lo...

Re: Multilingual and "fat" edition of Mint 9 created

The only problem is you need Clem's permission to call it Mint and distribute it with Mint branding and artwork. I created this mainly for "internal use" for a few friends of mine, so I didn't care about branding, and frankly I don't see much point in calling it something else than "Mint" because t...

Multilingual and "fat" edition of Mint 9 created

I've created a multilingual and customized, "fat" version of Linux Mint 9 based on the i386 Gnome DVD. The main goal was to have a live system for nontechnical users that can be used in emergencies if their primary systems (typically Windows) are broken. I wanted to make language and keyboard layout...
