Re: Conky on startup

Lost, if you don't mind me asking, why didn't you like Conky on startup? Did you find it using resources, or just a distraction? Part of the issue was the distraction, I like a nice clean desktop. The other part was trying to get everything I can from my internet connection. If you look at the pict...

Re: Conky on startup

I thought I would like conky on startup but I didn't. I created a launcher to launch the conky when I want to launch it. I have the launcher pointing to an executable file that contains which conkys to start. I also like the ability to turn off the conkys when I am done with them instead of letting ...

Re: How to make desktop icons smaller

I can help you with part of this. Right click the desktop --> desktop settings --> display tab will allow you to change your icon size. If you click the general tab you will see a box "open files with single click". I have that one checked so I don't have to right click and open.

Re: Linux Mint and Windows

A friend of mine, not the one I started this thread about, had his new Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 on it die. In Iraq tech support is the buddy who can fix your computer. I offered him either Mint or Ubuntu a while ago but he decided to have other friends try to reinstall Windows. Two nights ago h...

Re: Thunderbird profile on FAT USB - error cannot save mail

I just tried your example using Thunderbird 3.1.8 on Mint 9 Isadora. I am using an old USB drive that I have that is FAT 32. I right clicked the email I wanted to save and was able to save it to the USB drive and open it in Windows XP with Outlook Express. When I tried to drag multiple emails into t...

Re: Linux Mint and Windows

Thanks for the replies. I like the way Robin put it with "discover" instead of convert. Right now I am in Iraq and have the time to help him discover Linux without being too aggravated. The websites that were suggested are great. I looked at http://www.michaelhorowitz.com/Linux.vs.Windows.html last ...

Linux Mint and Windows

I am not looking to start a flame war but to gather some information. A friend of mine who is in IT and I were discussing Windows and Linux and he said that Linux was evil and I should stay away from it (too late). When he went to school he had four days of training on Linux and said it was too diff...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

Linux is a journey that is a joy to experience just remember a few basic things. If you have a problem, google it, you will find that you are not the only one who has had that problem. Search the forum, most of the time the answer is in here somewhere. If you can't find an answer just ask, someone w...

Harrison some of the ideas for the podcast may be in the forum, maybe not whole shows but short segments for each show. One example would be to focus on tips for newbies http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=59925 . Find a tip or two that the crew thinks would be worth discussing and spen...

Re: My call for a fast booting distro

I just timed Linux Mint 10 LXDE from start on a VM to inputting my userid and password was 35 seconds. Once they were entered it took 8 more seconds for the splash screen and network connection to be made. You may want to try this on a computer instead of VM to see if it's any faster for you.

If you want to message me I can show send you the setup for a conky that will just check temperature. One thing you may want to consider is a cooling pad that has a fan in it that is ran off of USB.

Re: Networking Virtual Box Linux Mint on Win7

Let me see if I have what you are asking correct. You want to use your Windows 7 as the host for Mint using a virtual machine and network Mint to your XP computer? I can answer part of it. I have a Mint 9 Gnome host and VM XP and LXDE. I use Oracle VM Virtualbox with VBox Guest Additions. That allow...

Re: Password 4 network on Linux won't work

I had a similar problem with my computer. To get around it I had to set my router up with WEP 128 bit encryption using one of the keys that was generated as the password.
