Re: Sad to say, but this sucks

Windows 10 can be placed on any box that will run it....for free. The only things gimped are some personal customization stuff and some "features lol"...but gaming and drivers? Wide open. So for free..........one can end it and get back to gaming with the full use of one's hardware and fu...

Re: I hate Texas right now

Yup, same situation here in Galveston County - our in-ground pool water the other day hit 96F. Not a very refreshing dip, if you were so inclined to take a swim. I'm keeping things at 78F during the day inside, and my electricity bill last month was almost $600. I'm expecting it to be even higher fo...

Re: Linux Mint 19.3 after 2023

I'll be a dissenting voice here and say that if you are able to use an updated browser, you'll be just fine online doing normal activities on a Linux based OS no longer receiving updates. e.g., don't go to pron and warez sites, don't open attachments from representatives of Nigerian Princes, etc. Li...

Re: Anyone Investing in Technology Stocks?

I was heavy in Tech and large growth, but got out earlier this year when I saw the freight train coming. Still, I held on too long (I'm an investor, not a day trader) and I'm down more than I should be. S&P is down ~17% for the year, and I'm down around 18 1/2%. I am 100% VFIAX in the brokerage ...

Re: FreshTomato 2022.2 : experiences?

I haven't upgraded yet so can't be much help - still rocking 2021.5 here. Been using Tomato since the Shibby days back on my venerable old Linksys WRT54GL, and it's always been the best solution for what I want to do on my network. Currently use it on my R7000, but I honestly don't upgrade very ofte...

Re: Wine no longer works

Probably not what you want to hear, but if all else fails go back to the Mint / Wine version that was working which ran your programs. This is the main reason I never updated my Mint or Wine version (until I had to) when I had everything working perfectly, but I know others would disagree with this ...

Have Frontier Fiber at our home we just moved out of and sold. 500/500 for $55/month no data cap. New home is slave to the Comcast cable and currently 100/10 for $40/month 1.2TB cap on promo, but it goes up to I think $60+ after the first year. This is an AT&T area so no Frontier, and AT&T h...

Re: xfce 19 or 20 / 32 or 64 bit for an old laptop (Samsung n110)

Well then that explains it. I'd probably still use a 32bit OS with 2GB RAM, something like Bodhi Linux 32bit Legacy. But yes, some software (like Chrome) has abandoned 32bit and the trend will continue to grow. Mint Xfce 64bit is still a good choice for that pc, especially if your computing needs ar...

Isn't that an Intel Atom n270 netbook? I've got a similar netbook and it is 32bit only - how are you running 64bit OS with it? IIRC, 32bit was dropped with the newer versions of Mint.

Re: a good installation guide for Wine in Linux Mint 20.3

Not entirely sure what 'software cursor' is if I'm being honest. IIRC, WINE used to only work properly with OpenGL in WoW, and this relegated you to the software mouse cursor in game (no hardware acceleration). This meant your camera, wherever you pointed your mouse, moved, etc. was laggy, like a d...

Re: a good installation guide for Wine in Linux Mint 20.3

I've played WoW pretty much solidly on Linux for the past five years and only one update ever borked the game, and that was fixed within about a week. In fact most Blizzard games work pretty flawlessly via Lutris with just the one Blizzard launcher. Really? That is good news then. I haven't wrestle...

Re: I want 4 remaining windows games work in Linux Mint

DOOM 2 My favourite game. https://www.silvergames.com/en/doom-2/ Just in case someone out there missed it back in the day. I always liked Quake better, but that is probably because I played it with the OpenGL patch (GLQuake) on my 3Dfx Jazz Adrenaline Rush card (whopping 6MB (yes, MEGABYTE) VRAM). ...

You should keep Windows for your gaming, don't delete it. If you want to game, Windows will never be "obsolete" for you. Some games may NEVER work, ever. This, exactly. After many years of gaming in Linux, I finally gave up and just resigned myself to dual-boot. Forever. It just got reall...

I agree with Andy, and I just went through this myself not long ago. I found that if I unmounted the drive in the file manager before pulling it out, it would alleviate the problems altogether.

Re: I swapped to Linux Mint. I went back to Windows, here's why

I was a long time WINE defender, and I used to enjoy slogging through all the trials and tribulations of trying to game on Linux. Until I no longer enjoyed it, and then I dual booted with Windows. If you are a gamer, I found after 10+ years of dedicated WINE hacking, using different versions for dif...

Re: Powerline - intermittent failure to connect

I use several powerline devices and they are sensitive to line quality and location. I could change outlet plugs in the same room and get different speed test results, so they are certainly dodgy in some installs. I can also attest to the fact that firmware upgrades made all the difference in my uni...

The only post that reflects reality here. 80-90% of pc users know nothing about partitions, installing and os and if they ever hear of linux they think it's an alternative windows also thinking compatible in terms of apps and hardware drivers. Unless linux be adopted from pc builders and become a c...
