Re: Can I change Cinnamon for MATE, or another.

I downloaded Tara Cinnamon and I find that in many apps, my tool menus are not there. I think I meant to use MATE. I seem to remember from years ago that there is an easy way to switch Windows Managers, (That's what these are, I believe). But I can't find a way to do it. They are called desktop man...

Re: Window/Font sizes tiny???

Hi, I've just started using a laptop running Mint 18.2. The screen is 14'', the resolution 2560x1440. However I have one problem: everything is very tiny. I've changed this on Firefox by setting a minimum font for all webpages and of course I can zoom into open office pages, etc. - but would there ...

I think the last version I had installed on my PC was Windows 3.1. Or was it 3.3?

Re: Troubles using perl with Linux Mint 19

Did 'rm -rf ~/perl5' Didn't reinstall anything after that, perl -v still responded so I tried one of my perl scripts. Perl script ran! Just for reference: Mint 19 comes pre-installed with perl5. You didn't remove that. What you deleted was a folder in your home directory that apparently contained a...

Re: Fonts very small in some apps.

VLC uses Qt4 to render the User Interface instead of GTK. You can fix this by installing qtconfig: sudo apt-get install qt4-qtconfig This will create 2 entries in your Preferences menu, "Qt 4 Settings" and "Qt5 Settings". Use the Qt5 Settings to adjust the menu font for VLC. A bit more detail: Open...

I would like to delete the .appledb directory but all these .fuse files are there and when I run this root@The_Matrix:/mnt/user/Sec Cam Backup# rm -r .AppleDB rm: cannot remove `.AppleDB': Directory not empty the fuse files means something still has an open handle to...

Re: (SOLVED) Cached thumbnails original location

Mmm, you're right; strings ~/.cache/thumbnails/*/*.png | grep file:/// . Thanks for posting back. [EDIT] Or somewhat better using exiftool or pngmeta . Exiftool seems to imply it's not a standardised tag but the original locations are stored as the Thumb::URI tag. You comment has inspired a bash sc...

Re: How to Use gparted Safely

I have a Gateway desktop PC that I set up dual-bootable for Win 10 and Linux Mint. After the last one or two Win 10 updates, they trashed my Win 10 and I can't access it due to corrupt files. Files don't corrupt themselves. Corrupt files usually point to a hardware failure, so before planning furth...

Re: Sort files in group like windows

This would be, I'm guessing, a function of the file manager. You didn't state what DE you're using (Cinnamon, Mate, etc.). If any DE has this feature, I'd bet it would be KDE. You can download the file managers independent of the desktop and try each to see if any have this feature. Any desktop wil...

Re: Sort files in group like windows

I don't know how Windows does it but you can arrange items by type, that is, by file extension. Simply right click in the window and select Arrange Items >. Click on the radio button By Type.

Re: How to Use gparted Safely

Resize Gateway to be smaller and resize / to be larger. Right click on the partition you want to resize and select Resize/Move from the pop-up menu.

gparted does it best to preserve the files but make a backup first, just in case.

Re: VPN Recommendations Needed!

Choose a VPN not in your country. Although VPNs prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, that does not mean your VPN provider does not record your every action. If your provider is not in your country, it will be harder for your gov't to spy on you.

Re: Do I need to upgrade Linux (from 17.3 Rosa)?

A couple of years ago I installed Mint 17.3 Rosa. It's worked pretty much fine since then, but recently I've been having problems with the PC getting unbearably slow (e.g. after suspend, or after opening large images). That shouldn't happen. One reason it might be slower is because a disk is fillin...

I recommend the one you like best. The thing about FOSS is that you can download and try them all. Yeah, it's not an instant answer but it is the most satisfying one.
