Re: DVD not automounting

I earlier inquired as to master/slave setting in that cable sense; if that's all fine please also make sure to just try a different cable. I tried another cable and same problem. I put the old cable on my hard drive and it works there, no problem. How do I determine the master/slave setting in the ...

Re: DVD not automounting

I dug an old DVD/CD drive out and installed it and have the same problems. I tried various changes to the hardware but still the same. :( When I was tracking down another bug ("ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, While resolving a named reference package element"), I discovered this posting . This could be th...

Re: DVD not automounting

Try booting back into your 19.3 install dvd/usb and test the drive's operation while booted to the live desktop Try it. Drive still not working. Make sure your UserID is a member of the cdrom group, then logoff and logon again. I can't guarantee it will change anything but since you want to use the...

Re: DVD not automounting

Maybe but why would lshw report it if it was loose? Exactly. How sure are you of the timing? I.e., did the drive work just before adding the SSD or "some time before"? I do see it's ATAPI; really only thing I can think of that is not plain hardware failure is you having knocked of a master/slave ju...

Maybe try reseating the DVD drive connectors. Could have knocked one a little loose when installing the SSD.

I see that the lshw report mentions "status=nodisc". Does it do so with a disc inserted?
Yes. That is the report with a DVD in the drive.

Please first just try a factory-pressed DVD if this is not, factory-pressed CD-ROM if it is.
Already tried that. Several different ones. They worked before I added the SSD.

DVD not automounting

I installed a SSD and loaded Mint 19.3 Mate on it and now my DVD drive is not working. I have search the internet and tried what I found but nothing works. The only thing I can think of now is to re-install Mint. I place a DVD in the drive and close it but then nothing. The drive is plugged in and s...

Re: New install: how to point home directory to old home directory?

I would go with option 3: copy everything over. It can be done with this bash command: ( builtin cd "HDD_home" >/dev/null ; tar cBpf - * ) | ( builtin cd "SDD_home" >/dev/null ; tar xvBpf - ) This will copy everything, including hidden files. Note that if you have already made changes to your apps'...

Re: Clean install or not?

Just a quick ack on mediclasser's system; your home directory contains (user-specific) configuration and can cause issues if old configuration gets out of sync with new (versions of) applications. Keeping /home version specific and having your own, non-volatile data on a separate data partition avo...

Re: Clean install or not?

But when the next LTS comes out, there will be no more upgrades, so you'll have to install the next one. Note, any Mint major release is LTS, in the sense of a Mint major release being based on an Ubuntu LTS release. I.e.,every minor Mint 19.x release is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and every Mint 18...

Re: Clean install or not?

Mint 19 is a long-term support. That means you can do a `apt-get dist-upgrade` to keep it up to date. But when the next LTS comes out, there will be no more upgrades, so you'll have to install the next one. Suggestion: put your `/home` in a separate partition. That way you can install a new OS witho...

Re: Missing Kernel Headers

Well, I cleaned up the old kernels. There where still 3.x.x versions left. I thought Linux would clean up the old ones automatically. I'm running 4.4.0-146 and it does seem to be trying to install 4.4.0-148, so I'm good (for now).

Re: Missing Kernel Headers

Yes, it installed the kernel image but not the headers. That's the problem. Without the headers, it can't load my WiFi driver. Apparently there was a package linux-image-generic-lts-xenial that had a weird dependency on linux-image-4.4.0-148-generic . I removed it install the headers. $ sudo apt-get...

<SOLVED> Missing Kernel Headers

I have recently install 4.4.0-148-generic but its headers were missing. When I booted this mornings I didn't have my WiFi and couldn't connect to the internet. I edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg to use 4.4.0-146-generic but this is a kludge. When I try to install the headers, I get: $ sudo apt-get install...

If both Windows and Linux are giving you stress, then perhaps you're expecting too much out of computers in general.

Re: Speccing a new Machine

Looks like a good build but I would pay more attention to the power supply. You need a good-quality power supply or your machine could act quirky at times. It is as important as the motherboard. :)

"Welcome to the dark side, young apprentice."

I'm curious about what type of gaming you do. You can run a lot of Windows games under Wine unless they have a high demand on resources. Sadly, you can only run those in their full glory under Windows. :(
