Re: Any way to tell update manager to do this?

Have been running the 4.15.x kernels successfully for quite some time. I would make sure to having installed another well functioning kernel from 4.15-series to have another good one in reserve beside your current one. Next, I would uninstall all the kernels from 4.4-series: Update Manager > View >...

Any way to tell update manager to do this?

Please see my sig-file for OS version, etc. :) Have been running the 4.15.x kernels successfully for quite some time. Problem is that Update Manager's insisting on trying to install the 4.4.x kernel series. How do I tell Update Manager that I don't want or need the 4.4.x kernel series so it doesn't ...

Re: How to setup Toshibas for fan control to work

Gedit isn’t a command found Edit didn’t have it installed GEdit is simply a text editor. I used it at the time; now I use (depending on context) nano, xed or leafpad. The very first line of the guide as written already shows to "correct gedit to whatever you use to edit text files" and gives variou...

Re: How I got FROSTWIRE to work- Mint 18.3

Quick question: Since Frostwire seems to be a torrent client, why bother? Transmission works out of the box. (Picked up LibreOffice 6.x help via Transmission when I meant to download the DEB directly due to a PEBCAK...) (PEBCAK: P roblem E xists B etween C omputer A nd K eyboard which is also someti...

Re: Attempting to update kernel

Marking "Solved"! Turns out I was both right... and wrong. The file doodle.db had reached an astonishing 2.6Gb! After killing it and two directories left over from old versions of Libre Office (4.4 and 5.1) once I confirmed the files were redundant, the machine is running once more. Figuring out wha...

Re: Attempting to update kernel

I believe that I have figured out what caused the root partition to get full. Apparently, a program created a very large file (for whatever purpose) but crashed before being able to delete it. It is a bit ironic that the suggestion to reinstall the OS has likely pointed out the real cause of the pro...

[Solved] Attempting to update kernel

Okay, this set of errors seems a bit off. How to correct? This was sent by MintUpdate, BTW... Re: Attempting to uninstall kernel 4.10.0-38

Okay, have noticed a real issue here. Until this problem is solved, no updates will succeed. This is pretty serious, or could be. The kernel is undeniably not on the system, yet dpkg continually attempts to uninstall it. Very weird stuff that I've not previously encountered with Linux, but had with ...

Re: Attempting to uninstall kernel 4.10.0-38

How do I capture the error stream to get this odd little problem kicked to the curb? I guess that means "no matter what I try" is "mintupdate" and not "apt" or synaptic - try apt or synaptic and you can see and copy the errors. From the error popup that Synaptic threw: E: linux-image-extra-4.10.0-3...

[Solved] Attempting to uninstall kernel 4.10.0-38

Trying to remove an obsolete 4.10.x kernel (4.10.0-38), but it's consistently failing to uninstall no matter what I try. The system even shows that the kernel uninstalled (this is where it gets weird) but it also claims the kernel image "could not be configured"... even after a reinstall. How do I c...

Re: Nothing shows in iwconfig or ifconfig except...

Got it corrected! Downloaded headers, image and extras from kernel.org and installed via sudo dpkg -i l*.deb after copying the three files into the same directory. It worked despite the fact dpkg threw three errors. Now running 4.4.0-92-generic with no issues.

Re: can i connect to router's print server?

The software is only available for Mac or Windows. I thought perhaps it would be possible to directly add the printer in System Settings>Printers using its network address. However I don't know how to obtain the network address or which protocol to use. Hm. Your printer should be able to display it...

Re: Nothing shows in iwconfig or ifconfig except...

You may also be able to fix with sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-extra-($uname -r) and reboot but that will only work if the linux-image-extra file is on the computer OK, it is becoming apparent that I need at least two more files (headers and image-extra) to correct this. Know where I...

[Solved] Nothing shows in iwconfig or ifconfig except...

Only entry in either case is loopback (lo), and the boot process shows problems with loading kernel modules. Bit of background seems necessary here. * before all this started, networking worked * current in-use kernel is marked for complete removal (suspect this is the problem) * unsure why this is ...

Re: publishers may now charge users

Hulu has been doing this. By paying 50% more you can watch without commercials, and even then some shows are exempted. Dont hold your breath. Cable television started out ad free because the customer was paying for ad free. And look what it has become. Yes, things surely change. I remember when Goo...

Re: 10 month install gotten slow, what to do?

I am a long time happy Linux Mint user, but after about 10 months this install (Mint 18) has gotten seriously slow. Nemo is as slow as it can be. Opening an internal partition takes a long time, startup and shutdown both take forever. Have you run BleachBit to remove temporary and junk files? If th...

Re: Simply put: Need to fully eliminate KDE

backup your home directory using rsync -a or preserve the partition if home has its own partition. Now re-install and restore the home. You will still have kde entries in home, but they won't be used. The problem is two-fold. I've already removed KDE and all known KDE-based programs (to my annoyanc...
