Unplugged all hard drives except the ssd. plugged the ssd into a sata 3 slot instead of the sata 6. Mint installed flawlessly. Turns out the cd rom drive which was originally in a sata 6 port was the issue. Now the cd rom drive is connected to a sata3 slot and the hdds are on sata 6 glad to be back ...

hi Andrea,
live boot using "system rescue cd" with the option to boot to an existing linux system on the hard drive.
Once you are in mint, install grub or burg.
