Re: Unexpectedly running without video hardware acceleration (Mint 19.3 on MSI Modern 14 A10M - Intel UMA graphics card)

Your system has been extensively modified. Firstly purge the oibaf PPA: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers === Revert to original drivers === To revert to standard Ubuntu drivers type the following in a prompt shell: $ sudo apt-get install ppa-purge $ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oi...

From what I read the Intel ax200 should be supported in kernels newer than 5.2. It has been used in x570 boards.

Re: How to resize root partition

Hi, guys. Yep sorry I haven't done this using the live session. Gonna have to figure out how to do that first. Also yeah I'm also confused on why my root partition keeps increasing in size. It's currently at 24.4GB right now. I feel like it's increasing every time I update. Is that normal? I feel l...

Re: B550 motherboards not OK with Mint 20

All three mint flavors use the exact same kernel. Cinnamon can give trouble if your graphics drivers are borked, which may be the case in a live cd environment since the Nvidia drivers don't load automatically always. Don't understand why Mate is give you trouble because by default Marco uses a cpu ...

Re: B550 motherboards not OK with Mint 20

What is the rest of your hardware? This nothing inherent to b550 boards that are radically different from b450/b350 boards. Running a Ryzen 3600 with an Asus B550 Gaming F mobo, 16GB Corsair 3200 ram and a GTX 1060 card. I assumed it would be OK because I just replaced my B450 mobo and never had a ...

Re: Kernel with wrong CPU frequencies

The steps of CPU powersaving mode are built in. Your OS can't set the frequency arbitrarily. It can only send information about power sates and load/demand. The actual stepping up and down is accomplished by the CPU. Nothing has changed in your CPUs governor. The OS is probably just reporting the fr...

Re: Partitioning existing SSD install

The advantages of a separate /home partition are: Easier to do a fresh install, e.g. moving from LM19 to LM20* - you can leave /home alone, your data and config files unchanged. bork your system and an image restore will also leave /home alone (but most of the time, this is what timeshift is for). ...

Re: Virtualbox Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

Mint 19.x uses a very old version of virtualbox that is no longer supported. I suggest you remove the version you installed completely from the repos and install the version from Oracles website. It no longer uses dkms. to remove it use sudo apt purge virtualbox* The new download is here: https://ww...

Re: Partitioning existing SSD install

1. If you did the default install of mint 19.x, you have a swap file within your / partition. By default Mint no longer creates a swap partition for single drive simple ext4 setups. 2. While there are many benefits to separate /home partition, for your usage case, that is a laptop with a single rela...

Do you have a link to the laptop detailed specs? Before discussing lvm we need to establish hardware support. it's xps 13 model 9380 with 16Gb ram and 1Tb ssd and i7-8665U Mint 19.3 or 20 should be fine. Go with the latter if possible. Boot into windows, activate your OS and then use the disk manag...

Re: Terminal, Sudo, Wine

The brutal reality, is that other than games, most windows programs have a hell of a time running under wine. The office suite is a perfect example, a series of fixes and breakages that extend back a decade or more.

What programs specifically do you need to run in windows?

Re: Need help with intel-media-va-driver-non-free on Mint 19.3

That's as good as it gets for this version of Mint. You have all the video acceleration you can get, which will work for most codecs listed above. The nonfree driver you cited is only for newer 8th generation intel graphics and above, essentially anything that has "lake" in the name. It adds some e...
