Re: entire system backup tool?

I'm a Remastersys fan, although it won't run unattended without doing some scripting. I have shot myself in the foot several times, and Remastersys has always allowed me to restore to my latest backup without drama. I tried Clonezilla, but it seemed like overkill for what I was doing.

Re: Only two install options (Katya)

RedLeg's "your loss" comment was uncalled for and, as you observe, reflects an attitude that is all too common in linux-land. My primary distro is Ubuntu, with Linux Mint Debian Edition a distant second. For my hardware (Acer D150 netbook) everything works with Ubuntu, which has not been m...

Re: Recomended distro for an old Laptop

Hi, I have an old Toshiba Satellite with 752 MB RAM, Celeron 2GHz, ATI Video Card, 60 GB HD. I installed on it Linux 10 GNome and its a bit sluggish; what Mint distro would be better for this laptop? Thx In my (limited) experience, LMDE seems quite a bit snappier than regular Mint. Joli OS (formerl...

Re: Supper noob question, what is the super key?

I'm making some hotkey and so and the superkey always appears. What is it. Is it like Shift, ctr, alt or something? Assuming your starting point is a computer that came with Windows installed, it's the key with a Windows logo. I didn't like using it as a modifier key, so I remapped it so that it to...

Re: Failure to boot... and this is not the first time.

Self-burned DVDs are - in my view - the single-worst storage media (as for reliability) that has been designed in the age of computing.... Must be a youngster. Clearly, you never experienced the joy of using an audiocassette as a storage medium. Also, what are your computer specs? This is...

Re: How important is a fast hard drive, beyond basic 7200 rp

You might want to take a look at the new Seagate Momentus hybrid drives. Not quite as fast as a SSD, but substantially faster than a straight HDD. It's all about access time; I run Linux off a 32gb SSD, with access time around 0.27 ms.

Re: LMDE vs LM10

But, really, why should I change to LMDE, besides the rolling side? While I don't have benchmarks to prove it, LMDE "feels" faster than regular Mint. Ubuntu 10.04 is my "production" distro; LMDE is my sandbox. For reasons I still do not understand, every time I want to apply upd...

Re: SSD and TRIM -- updating kernel

I have an OCZ 32gb SSD on which I run Ubuntu 10.04. After 2 firmware upgrades, the SSD now supports Trim, but I cannot honestly say I ever noticed (or measured) any difference in performance, with or without Trim, over the past 10 months.

Re: best non-mint distro

The real answer is "Whatever floats your boat, and works on your hardware." For me, on an Acer D150 netbook, Ubuntu 10.04 is my primary Linux distribution; everything works, and I like the UI. LMDE is my sandbox, mostly to learn additional skills. I am not particularly fond of the Mint men...

Re: login automatically

I set password control in the BIOS of my netbook, so Linux automatic login doesn't provide any security risks that I am uncomfortable with. ⋅  Install LMDE with "no password required" option ⋅  Menu > Control Centre > Login Screen ⋅  Login as .... automatically

Re: Do you run Linux as your sole operating system?

Sole? No. Primary? Yes. Three computers, from oldest to newest: 1) iMac G5. It just keeps on ticking, although the obsolete PowerPC processor limits what can be done with it. Essential for iTunes/iPod, and running MS Entourage e-mail client that is required to access e-mail at my former place of emp...

Re: [RESOLVED]Could not apply Changes! Fix broken packages f

Does my thread sound similar to what you're experiencing? http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=64892 It only occurs within mintUpdate. Running anything from the terminal is applied successfully. Mine is caused, I believe, by the addition of extra repositories to the system. Specifi...

Re: Which edition on netbook?

You will get lots of opinions. I started with Mint 9, and switched to Linux Mint Debian Edition, which is evolving rapidly, and seems to run well on minimal hardware. I'm running LMDE on an Acer AA1 D150 netbook, installed on an 8gb SDHC memory card, with acceptable performance. No significant probl...

Re: I am disappoint.

@Hawkpaw: A detailed description of your hardware would be useful. Without that, people can only guess or make snarky comments. Note, however, that the forum rules specifically say: Please do not post support questions here . If you want help solving your problems, this is the wrong place. The Hardw...
