Re: 10 Years Later, and Still a Noob

If you're not having any problems in your windows install, then check system monitor to find out what is consuming too much of your cpu and/or ram. That might possibly give you a clue to what the problem is with your install. Also you can try other versions and see if they are more compatible. I per...

Re: Gnome installation changed my login screen.

If you were using mate or the xfce spin, then yes Gnome 3 is much slower. There are some things you can do to make it faster, and a search on google to make gnome 3 faster throws up quite a few interesting results. How valid or valuable these suggestions are is however anybody's guess as I've not tr...

Re: Select Version

Go for the 64 bit option rather than the 32 bit one. A simple way would be for you to create a bootable usb using unetboot and boot into the live environment. Then open system monitor and see if the OS is taking advantage of all your hardware.

Re: Updates

Please note that the mintbackup only keeps a record of the applications that you have installed. This means that when you do restore, it will download the packages and install them. Since your version of the app seems to be giving you trouble, an easy way would be for you to note down all the apps t...

Re: Suspend and another OS

Nope. You can boot up only one OS at a time in one system, unless you want to use a virtualization software to run a virtual desktop. You can of course switch users, but you would probably be aware of that. Also you can switch desktop environments, but you would still require to log out of one befor...

Re: Disable "Authentication is Required" messages

Anything that you do at the user level does not create this problem. Only when you want elevated previlages will you get the prompt. If you like to install a bunch of software use synaptic. This way you only enter the password only once when the application opens. Software manager may be more user f...

Re: Shutdown problem

It sometimes happens, although your particular case never happened to me before. For example, I have the systray quickstarter enabled for openoffice any the buttons almost never work for me. My keyboard has a power button, and this too never works. So what I usually do is ctrl+alt+backspace to log o...

Re: iTunes equivalent for mint?

I use banshee. It's not the same but gives most of the same functionality. Even Rhythmbox connects to your iphone or ipod, but gets things done differently. That's all.

Re: How to spin down hard disc in KDE

Sorry for the delayed response axl but I was traveling and didn't have access to my comp. As for your suggestion, I was coming round to thinking the same anyway, so I guess there's nothing much I can do. As you say, spinup and spindown probably cause more wear than if they keep spinning.

Re: xfce Update Manager not auto-updating

I've noticed the same thing, and although I cannot explain why this happens, I find that if I change the refresh time to something other than default (I have it set to once every 6 hrs) I get notified immediately any new update comes in.

How to spin down hard disc in KDE

I have LMDE installed on my system, pointing to the latest repos. I have moved over to using xfce and KDE (I installed the KDE-full package from the repos) after up4. In xfce, I've got the power manager setting set so that my desktop goes to sleep mode after 30 min of inactivity. I've got the same b...

I have no idea why that happens. But there are a few other posts detailing problems with the grub menu after installing LMDE. Maybe the developers have changed something.

Re: Wrong Password in Lock Screen!

Once I lock my laptop, on the 'Enter Password' screen... whatever I do, it says 'wrong password'.. and interestingly the same password works everywhere else including the startup Login Screen. Sorry can't help. How do I change what my power button does ? I want the shutdown/sleep/restart options to...

Re: How to dual boot on Windows 7 ? [un-solved]

I'm not too sure if I get the sequence of events here. And I don't know if you're having a problem because you're not partitioning properly or because you're installing mint on top of your windows install. One easy way to rule out partitioning problems is to partition from windows itself. Are you do...

Re: How to dual boot on Windows 7 ? [un-solved]

After closing GParted, i never had hit "refresh"! You don't usually have to refresh. This is because Gparted will itself refresh when you apply that changes. Secondly you will be closing Gparted and using the installer to choose the partition you want to install to. And if your unallocated partitio...

but then i got a message telling me to choose which partition i wanted to install LM on
And you choose the unallocated partition and install mint into that partition.
Unless of course I've misunderstood what you were saying.

Re: Gnome Shell Applications Menu is Empty

I don't know if I've misunderstood your question here. but from what I can gather I'm posting a reply. Have you tried logging into the fallback mode, or into mate. The reason is that if your system does not have an accelerated graphics card, when you move your mouse over the menu nothing happens in ...

Re: Available updates...

I don't know the exact reason why this is so, but it is a known problem and there is even a post by Clem from years back detailing why this is so. I have however found that if you change the default from update every 15 min to once every few hours, you actually get notified whenever you have an upda...
