Re: LM 18.1 ISO Cinnamon Boots to David User

Nevermind, VMWare was being weird.

It kept booting to an image I created for a co-work a year or so ago .................

Had to delete the old iso and then point to the LM iso again.

She's all fine.

Re: LM 18.1 ISO Cinnamon Boots to David User

No option for that, I break into Grub and there is not install option. Just the standard boot into image or Advanced where I can only select recovery

I'm booting directly to the iso.

Is the only option to boot into single user?

If so looks like someone seriously borked the image upload ;)

LM 18.1 ISO Cinnamon Boots to David User

Downloaded the iso from couple of sources and each iso boots to a David User

Looks like a bad image was sent to the repositories, anyone have a PW to the David user?

Just use "safe install" when you get to Grub

Re: I have/like Mint- but...WHY? What was the point??

It's all about choice and also the tools you need. The ease of use is excellent, no worries about chasing down updates, drivers, etc. for most everything is in the repositories. My 85 yo father has been on it for close to 10 years, used to have him on Windows and much easier with Linux. Sent from my...

Best advice for noobs with Linux is to find a local Linux Users Group (LUG). That will cut the frustration down and they can actually be shown what to do. Linux is'nt difficult, it's just different. If my 85 year old father can get around it with less hassel's then he had with Windows then pretty mu...

I use multiple accounts with Claws Mail, works very well.

You just browse the accounts via traditional tree, claws is also very fast.

Sounds like we've got a simular background. I cut my teeth on HPUX and Solaris. I've run them for years. Started messing with Linux in the late 90's with Redhat, SuSE, etc. I then ran Gentoo for years, really love the ability to custumize it to the hardware and the rolling updates. Anyway I started ...

+1 handbrake, outstanding

I actually built a Vortexbox for my Nephew and will be building one for myself soon. Best media ripper/server I've found. With the Plex plugin it's awesome

Re: We don't need no stinking trojans

Linux used Unix as its model so it's" Unix" like. That said computer networking and the Internet comes from Unix. From the start it's a multi user OS and security was/has been at its core.

Re: Re: The Mint 15 joke

Maybe it's time to base LM main on Debian  Been an advocate for this for a long time, having a rolling distro (well semi) at least like LMDE would make life so much easier. Mint IMO is mature/ popular enough to make the leap. That's one thing I miss about Gentoo, once installed no more maj...

Re: We don't need no stinking trojans

To put it simply, Linux is allot harder to exploit than MS due to its fundamental core design, one being the concept of separation of system and userland. MS has a large user base andeasier to exploit

Thanks for the answers, I won't be playing any games. My host system is a Intel Pentium Dual Core 3.33Ghz Dual 500gb HDDs and 4gb of RAM. I have to support and repair windows PC's, so what every I need windows for will be simple tasks such as moving data, running driver stuff, maybe testing out a p...

I don't use Virtual Box, been using VMWare for years and I just have a Windows install in VMWare. VMWare does activeX pretty well but still there is a bit of a hit on performance, for it's not like bare hardware. So if you're a heavy gamer playing the latest very 3D intensive games then dual boot. B...

Re: Newbie asks: Evolution or Claws?... Vote & Advise

You beat me to the punch, Marcus. I found that where sent mail is saved can be specified when the account settings are open, not when the account is created. It's very much like Thunderbird. Now, there's just one more potential hitch. Can my whole mailbox structure (what Thunderbird would call my '...

I'll have to look at my settings when I get home. Its in the config where you designate the roles/properties of the folders.

Thanks, Marcus! I just installed it and I'm configuring it to get ready to do some experiments. Do you mind some questions? I'm very happy to see this: 'File' > 'Import mbox file...'. In 'Configuration' > 'Preferences' > 'Mail Handling' > 'Sending' [_] 'Save sent messages to Sent folder': I assume ...

Howdy! I'm using the Xfce desktop. I'm pretty ignorant about Linux. Ignorant newbie question: Can Evolution (part of Gnome proj.) be used in the Xfce desktop? What about Claws? What do you think of them (especially reliability)? What I want: - separate file for each message - in other words, not MB...
