Re: Firefox address bar is showing gray black and gray color

Yeah, this seems to be a persistent problem with certain video cards. Here's how I fixed it, in case anyone wants to know: 1. In Firefox's address bar, type: about:config ...and press Enter. Click the "I'll be careful" button when it appears. 2. In the "Search:" box near the top of the page, type: g...

Re: I hate Apple (&) Macs! A one time rant.

Why bother ranting about Apple, though? Just install Mint, add Cairo-Dock, and enjoy!

Re: I hate Apple (&) Macs! A one time rant.

For what it's worth, the reason so many schools have Macs is that Apple offers a major discount to educational institutions. They've done that ever since the early Mac days. So although it's a bit counterintuitive for most of us who've automatically thought "Mac = $$$", it's actually been cheaper fo...

Did you fix your issue with redundant startup entries?

I guess it's not a problem if no one thought it was... Thanks!

For what it's worth, I think I would've done it like this:

"Is anyone into hockey?" ?

Just thought I'd mention it for the next time you incredulously quote someone.

Re: Repair GPT after failed Mint install?

Glad to here the tutorial helped and thanks for posting under it the above info. I didn't know Mint could now use "Secure Boot", so that info may be handy for people who want to use it. Yes, most Linux distros now include a "secure boot key" signed by Microsoft. Contrary to popular belief, Microsof...

Re: Control brightness on new Toshiba notebook?

Well, for some reason, my brightness F-keys are now working. Was it because I tried the two methods I describe below, and one or both had some kind of persistent effect? It beats me, but it was a pleasant surprise. Answering your replies: have you tried using acpi_backlight=vendor in grub? Yes, I di...

Is this for BIOS/MBR systems only? Or does it work with UEFI/GPT too?

Re: difference between the lm firefox and regualr one?

The Mint "branding" on Firefox is rather overbearing and irrelevant, if you ask me. I thought the whole idea of Firefox was to avoid things like branding and corporatization. I remember that one of the reasons FF became a separate branch of the Mozilla project was objections over Netscape's sponsors...

[SOLVED] Control brightness on new Toshiba notebook?

Hi everybody, I've just installed Mint 16 Mate on my new Toshiba C50D-A notebook. It has an AMD A4-5000 APU (processor) and AMD Radeon HD 8330 graphics. To get X to start, here's what I had to do: 1. In GRUB2's startup editor, replaced quiet splash with nomodeset 2. Dismissed X error messages; then ...

Re: [TUTORIAL] Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1 Computer

This tutorial was terrifically helpful as I installed Mint 16 Mate on my (UEFI) Toshiba C50D-A notebook (AMD A4-5000 CPU, 4GB DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 8330 graphics). In the PC's UEFI settings, I did disable Fast Boot. (In case there's any confusion, this [usually] means changing the "Boot Speed" setting...

Re: Repair GPT after failed Mint install?

Hi again guys, Success! I've installed Mint 16 Mate alongside Windows 8.1. gold_finger's UEFI tutorial was very helpful—thanks, dude! As it turned out, I didn't have to disable Secure Boot to boot from my Rufus-prepared , UEFI-compatible Mint USB flash drive. When I first tried all this and couldn't...

Redundant Startup entry?

Hi guys, I've just installed Mint 16 Mate on a UEFI portable (and it worked!). The only odd thing I've noticed is that, in Startup Applications, I have two identical "Network" entries, both with the command nm-applet . There are also two "PolicyKit Authentication Agent" entries, but they have differ...

Re: Repair GPT after failed Mint install?

GF: Thanks for your reply. (And BTW, that was a great line you had: "Why no, Mr. Bond—I expect you to die!") It looks like the partitions you thought you created did not actually get created. If you used GParted to do that, you most likely did not hit the "Apply" button after making the changes. Tha...

Repair GPT after failed Mint install?

Hi guys, I've screwed things up here, and would appreciate your help. My son knows how much I like Mint, so he asked me to install it as a dual-boot on his new notebook. I created a Mint 16 live USB, but the notebook is UEFI and wouldn't boot from USB. So I checked the Web, and read that people had ...
