[SOLVED] LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
With an old computer which lets the LM21 installer boot into BIOS-mode I could install LM21 on the HD of the IdeaPad S205. So I keep that old PC also for creating legacy LM21 installations on memory sticks and external SSDs. (It would be nice if the LM21 installer offers an option to chose between B...

[SOLVED] LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
I found an Acer Aspire laptop PC (UEFI disabled) which I can use to install linuxmint-21-xfce-64bit.iso on media for old PCs: see viewtopic.php?p=2213111#p2213111

[SOLVED] Upgrading CompuLab PC from LM19.3 to LM20.3 in BIOS-mode, because LM21 installer starts with EFI-mode menu.
... I am fine with LM20.3, but I have a Proposal: Even if a PC supports UEFI, the linuxmint-21-xfce-64bit.iso should start (offered as a menu option?) in BIOS-Mode (like the linuxmint-20.3-xfce-64bit.iso installer) if the target disk already is MBR formated without ESP. ... @pbear: As you may have ...

Re: Upgrading CompuLab PC from LM19.3 to LM20.3 in BIOS-mode, because LM21 installer starts with EFI-mode menu.
Any way, you can see LM 21 Live booted on BIOS mode as per inxi. UEFI [Legacy]: Phoenix.... , means UEFI is enabled and also CSM (legacy BIOS) on computer setup but you are booting on BIOS mode on that session, so you can proceed with installation and omit the warning you would receive about can't ...

Upgrading CompuLab PC from LM19.3 to LM20.3 in BIOS-mode, because LM21 installer starts with EFI-mode menu.
This is about a CompuLab Intense-PC v: 1.x. The PC is configured for BIOS booting LM19.3 which has been installed some time ago on a MBR formatted HD without an ESP partition. It is working well. I consider to upgrade the OS to LM21 64bit. I would use the linuxmint-21-xfce-64bit.iso live system. How...

Re: LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
... like if I recall correctly, as I just recently installed Mint 21.0-Xfce on my old desktop, I just did "EXT4" with the "/" using the whole drive and then put bootloader (manually guide it to it) on that same partition ... Thank you for the hint. I thought about something like...

Re: LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
... As for your situation, I will make two observations. First, if you are under the impression LM21 won't install on a BIOS computer, that's not correct. There are a few issues, especially a couple of annoying bugs, but the installation can be put through and the system will boot. Second, that mac...

Re: LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
This is just for information. I don't want to waste the time of supporters with solving issues of a PC which has a bug (setup menu does not work properly), but perhaps this helps other users of the IdeaPad S205. Also is might be interesting, that at least the live linuxmint-21-xfce-64bit.iso runs we...

Re: [SOLVED] LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
For that exercise I will have to remove the HD from the S205, install Linux and put it back into the S205. You're making this unnecessarily difficult. We can't help much, though, without the system information. Sorry, I didn't make clear enough that I don't ask for support anymore, because of the d...

[SOLVED] LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
The setup menu of the S205 is broken. Watever I change in the setting doesn't change the configuration. As I am stuck with a laptop PC which once had been configured for BIOS boot, I used linuxmint-19.3-xfce-32bit.iso to install Linux Mint. That worked, as the 32bit version doesn't support UEFI. For...

Re: LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
Thank you for the reply. Yes, I can rune a live session. But in the meanwhile I found this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Lenovo_IdeaPad_S205. I was wrong. UEFI *is* supported. But the settings menu for UEFI seems to be hidden (https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Lenovo-IdeaPad-S205-4BCN24WW-H...

LinuxMint 21 Installer doesn't detect that IdeaPad S205 supports BIOS mode only
Booting old Lenovo IdeaPad S205 from USB-stick (LinuxMint 21 XFCE) yields the Grub menu for EFI mode, not the Isolinux menu for BIOS mode. Before the Grub menu is shown, the screen shortly displays "error: file '/boot/' not found." Does that mean that the installer fails to detect that the...

Re: Empty right applications panel in mint menu
I can not find any sane explanation for this. Yeah, me neither. The application list is generated based on the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications and ~/.local/share/applications , but if you wiped those the other menus would also stop working, so that cannot be the answer... Just use mate-ap...

Re: Chinese input woes
This works too in my admin account: #!/bin/bash # ibus exit sleep 1s ibus-daemon -d I guess that in a user account with no admin privileges I will have to enable using the script with sudo. And for a perfect script checking the behavior when switching users might also have to be tested. But I am too...

Re: Chinese input woes
I found a workaround, but it's akward. (1) After logging into your desktop, quit from IBus (right click on icon, quit) (2) Call IBus Preferences from the Mint applications menu or call ibus-setup from the console. (3) Use that application to start IBus and then close window. I put the IBus Preferenc...

Traditional Chinese input: IBus and Fctix
I use Linux Mint 19.1 with the Mate desktop and the latest 4.15.x Kernel. For traditional Chinese I use IBus. An issue (https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=1637418#p1637418) with Chinese input and Firefox made me aware of another possible issue. When installing support for traditional Chine...

Re: Chinese input woes
I am bumping this because I am still looking for a solution to this problem. I am "unbumping" this, because I have the same issue (Japanese, traditional Chinese). It seems to be an old issue, perhaps since 2014 I use Linux Mint 19.1 with the Mate desktop and the latest 4.15.x Kernel. Inpu...
