Re: Salvage an old MacBook [SOLVED}

Did a fresh install of 64-bit Mint 20 Cinnamon on both the MacBook2,1 and MacBook Pro2,1. Didn't try the upgrade route. Used Matt Gadient's instructions to create my own ISO to install.

Re: Warpinator platforms?

Look into NitroShare. I've been using it for years and it has worked on various Linux versions and Windows. Transfers files and directories to just about anything on your local LAN. Version 0.3.1 is the one I have stuck with no problems.

Re: Compatibility Mode - Cinnamon 20

OK. Follow-up question: If the first install option doesn't work and you have to use compatibility mode, why does Grub install with "quiet splash" instead of using any one or more of the special items used in the compatibility mode that was necessary to get Mint to install? Seems like 'nom...

Compatibility Mode - Cinnamon 20

Just what does it mean to 'install in compatibility mode' - second option on the install screen. What is different from plain first option of just install?

May I assume it will work across Windows, MacOS and all versions of Linux?

Re: Salvage an old MacBook

Finally got the last questions answered. Burned a Mint Cinnamon 64-bit from the Matt Gradient site. Used it and did a 'normal' install, including formatting the 32-bit / partition and not formatting the /home partition. Also told it to encrypt the /home partition (it was encrypted in 32-bit mode) an...

Re: Salvage an old MacBook

Update to the salvage operation: Have installed 2x2G memory in both machines (can never have enough). Seems to report 2.8 in use. Can probably just use 1x2G and 1x1G for a total of 3G. Installed 500G SSD in the MacBrook Pro - Makes a HUGE difference! Still need to get a new battery, but the MacBook ...

Re: Mint 19.3 and Apple iOS 13.3 any new successful syncing methods?

I was using nitroshare 0.3.1 between a MacBook Pro and Linux for some time very successfully. It will transfer individual files or entire directories - but only on your local network. https://launchpad.net/nitroshare/0.3/0.3.1 is where you can find it. I think this is the best version. Install it on...

Re: Mint 19.3 on old Macbook - GRUB error before boot menu appears

Wasn't aware of this thread, but just posted similar solution under topic "Salvage an old MacBook" in 'Other Topics'. In my case, I didn't attempt to keep any Apple software and just installed Mint 19.3 XFCE.

It does work and maybe will solve your problem.

Salvage an old MacBook [SOLVED}

A friend had given up on her MacBook as too old and unsupported by Apple along with a battery that won't charge. She gave it to me with the stipulation that I wipe the drive of all her data. I took it out of the machine and connected it to my laptop and ran DOD wipe on it. I reinstalled the MAC soft...

Re: Only 1 of 2 cores working

This statement that I made in my previous comment still bothers me: "Evidently, selecting an older kernel from the Advanced menu doesn't get you ONLY the setup that went with that kernel." There must be other files that are updated over older kernel versions somewhere and selecting an olde...

Re: Only 1 of 2 cores working

OK. Did a no-format re-install of 19.1 after selecting boot with 4.15.0-20 and removing all other kernels; and then brought it up to date with everything except for installing newer kernels. Worked fine with 2 cores. Then installed kernel 4.15.0-55 and still have 2 cores operating as they should. On...

Re: Only 1 of 2 cores working

I should point out that 19.1 has been running since released with no problems. This is recent. As if one of the recent 'updates' caused the problem. Generally, I keep everything current. Unfortunately, I just ran Timeshift using a new 256G flash drive and I discovered this problem the next day. Cann...

Re: Only 1 of 2 cores working

nproc 1 That's it. Not just a inxi problem. I have an application that always runs when I or my wife are not physically using the machines. It really cranks 100% on each and every core constantly. That's how I noticed that this particular laptop was just getting half done of what it should be doing ...

No such option available in BIOS. Also, note that everything works in Win 7 and in Flash boot of original 19.1 configuration.

Re: Only 1 of 2 cores working

Update: Just booted from the flash drive I used for the original installation and inxi recognizes the two cores.

Like I said previously, I don't know when this changed, but it looks like software and not a hardware problem.

Help!

Only 1 of 2 cores working

Just noticed today that only one of the two cores on my wife's laptop (Toshiba A215) are running. inxi indicates this is a Single Core model but sensors detect temps on both cores. htop shows only one core running. sensors k8temp-pci-00c3 Adapter: PCI adapter Core0 Temp: +52.0°C Core0 Temp: +52.0°C ...

Manufacturer supported scanner?

Are there ANY scanner models FULLY SUPPORTED by a manufacturer? By that I mean ALL features that are supported under Windows. No workarounds or third-party software - not Sane or Xsane...and will fully support if called for a problem.

OK. Consider this SOLVED for getting the GPU identified and having the latest version of BOINC installed. Re: Intel GPU driver

Nothing to do with gaming. BOINC downloads scientific computing jobs to your computer and runs them invisibly in the background. These projects investigate diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research. Most are run by universities around the world ...
