Black screen after login on Cinnamon 20.1
I have a fairly fresh install of Mint on Virtualbox, and have had persistent but manageable graphics issues since install. Host is Win 10, GTX 1070 graphics card. I just updated to the latest suggested kernel (5.4.0-74-generic) and, fool that I am, didn't make a backup/snapshot first. Now upon loggi...

Re: LM 18 on MacBook pro A1297: blank screen, can't boot with nomodeset.
Thanks, there are some interesting tips on there, but none of them appear relevant to my issue.

LM 18 on MacBook pro A1297: blank screen, can't boot with nomodeset.
I'm in the process of upgrading my A1279 17" MacBook pro to Mint 18 from 17.2, clean install. When attempting to boot with nomodeset added in grub, I end up at a blank screen. I've tried both standard and compatibility modes. When attempting to check the medium I set nosplash and nomodeset, but...

How to open truecrypted partition with ENCFS?
I have a dual boot system, Win 7 and Mint 17.2. I'd like to encrypt my Win 7 partition, because I know how vulnerable it is (With HDD access I can crack the password in under 5 minutes). I know that dual boot with encryption is possible (EG: http://post.ryanoshea.com/post/774218145/howto-encrypt-a-d...

Re: 17.2 won't boot
The problem seems to be solved, though the solution is bizarre. I reset the bios to defaults, and it worked fine, il everything worked normally. Then I changed the boot order so the HDD was first, and it stopped working again. Then I put the DVD drive as first boot choice, and it's working again. Ve...

17.2 won't boot [SOLVED]
This is a clean install on a Lenovo G505s, on a new Seagate 1TB SSHD hybrid drive. I installed Windows 7 (so it wouldn't mess up grub later). When I made a live USB inside 17.1 on another computer using the mint USB utility, it wouldn't boot that, so I created another using Unetbootin. That one work...

Re: Issues with EUFI and USB install: drops to grub shell.
Thanks for the corrections, that's helpful. IME, when my disk table was GPT, and I booted in CMS/legacy mode, the W7 installer would refuse to install to the disk. As far as I've read, this is an international behavior of the installer. Because I couldn't boot the install media in UEFI mode (includi...

Re: Issues with EUFI and USB install: drops to grub shell.
Oy, that's a nightmare... Even worse because he wants to run W8, which afaik requires UEFI. I wonder why he doesn't just go for W7 with msdos partition table and legacy BIOS, seems to be the easy solution in the long run, until these issues are worked out in the next generation of hardware. <story> ...

Re: Issues with EUFI and USB install: drops to grub shell.
thanks for the help, in the end I decided to just bite the bullet. I rsynced my files to anexternal hard drive, and switched to an ms-dos partition table.

Re: Issues with EUFI and USB install: drops to grub shell.
Here are my BIOS settings. If I switch to CMS mode, I can boot from my devices, but I need to boot as UEFI because the disk is partitioned as GPT. I downloaded the manual, and it had no useful information on this subject. I'm wondering, do I need to delete all the secureboot keys or something? Thank...

Re: Issues with EUFI and USB install: drops to grub shell.
"Ubuntu" is how the bios recognizes the Mint16 that's already on the hard drive, and yes the Jetflash is the USB stick with the Mint16 live image on it. As I mentioned, it doesn't give me the DVD drive as an option to boot to, with our without media in it. It recognizes the drive as a SATA...

Issues with EUFI and USB install: drops to grub shell.
This is on a Samsung NP535U4C laptop. I've tried making a USB on two different sticks, using Unetbootin, USB image creator, and manually with DD, and with Mint16 and Peppermint4 images, all done from inside Mint16. I've run MD5sum on the images, and they are good. Fastboot is disabled (otherwise it ...

Thanks for that. For the second one I mounted and unmounted it a few times, and eventually got it to create a new table. For the first one I'll try your suggestion, so thanks.

Can't format after using USB Image writer,USB sticks bricked
This is a bizarre issue, that I hope someone can help with. I used USB image writer on a stick, it took hours, and in the end the image didn't work. I tried both mint 11 (for an older box) and Peppermint 3, from inside Mint 14 Cinnamon. I tried to do it again, with the same result. But even as admin...

Re: Spell Check does not work in Libre Office
Open a terminal and do: sudo apt-get purge libreoffice-common mv ~/.libreoffice ~/OLDSETTINGS sudo-apt-get install libreoffice-common To brute-force reinstall LibreOffice and settings... Not intending to be rude, but this is probably the worse advice I've seen an admin give. After doing this you wi...
