Re: Choosing the right package of GCC
I'm sorry, but while the build-essential package might be a solution, it's not the best one and it doesn't answer my question. I don't want to build anything, MATLAB does. And it would like to do this with a somewhat old version of GCC. The command "apt depends build-essential" doesn't tel...

Choosing the right package of GCC
This might be just the newbie in me feeling insecure, but nonetheless, it means I need your help. Thanks to you all for the fact that this forum exists. MATLAB installation tells me I need a "supported compiler" for a few of the toolboxes. I read on their webpage that this means the GNU Co...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
That sounds like too far from my knowledge, so I'm very thankful if you come up with a solution. I like this distro, my top pick for now. Note that the buttons did work with ALSA, so the problem is with routing them to the PulseAudio volume control, rather than having the OS talk nicely with the har...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
Well, that installed the complete PulseAudio system, of course. And that works, except for the hardware buttons for changing volume on my ThinkPad X220. And that problem is quite a lot worse than having to edit a configuration file and reboot the computer to change output device... I will try to fin...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
I tried installing the gnome-audio package and, by default, it's dependencies. With a mysterious result: the thing don't work at all. The terminal gives a doubled warning and a little GUI box shows up saying "Waiting for the audio system to respond" (or something similar, that quote is tra...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
I actually stumbled upon a solution myself while idling through the forum, that I hadn't found by searching. The original problem in that thread wasn't that closely related, but the solution was eventually provided for me in this post by wyrdoak. My /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf now contains the fo...

Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
I started out by asking this in the newbie subforum, but got no answer so I'm reposting it here. A mod would be wise to delete my first thread, it didn't make it all the way to useful. I can't find the option to change the sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE. The device I want to use instead of the ...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
I have searched for a control center, or something similar, but the closest thing I found was two submenus in the MintMenu called "Preferences" and "System tools" (or "Administration tools"). Those two submenus contained most of what I remember was to be found in the co...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
Well, thanks for trying anyway. Maybe this was not a newbie question after all, but it does feel rather stupid. Like I can't find the right button, however I'm confident that I've searched the menus rather thoroughly... maybe the feature simply isn't there from the start, I might need to install som...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
Well, my system is in Swedish and that would most certainly translate to "Ljudinställningar" - I know a bit of German too. You're not wrong at all. But, the problem is that that option doesn't exist when I rightclick the speaker icon, just the generic panel preferences. That my desktop env...

Re: Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
No, since I simply can't find any "Audio Preferences". Where should I look?

[PLEASE DELETE] Choosing sound output device in Mint 11 LXDE
[EDIT] A mod would be wise to delete this thread, since it didn't turn into anything useful. I have reposted the question in the LXDE subforum. I somehow thought it would be a good idea to try something new, and went for the LXDE release this time. Turns out I run into a single problem and suddenly ...

Re: [SOLVED] Do I need a 64-bit OS to run 64-bit application
I believe maximum swappiness fits my needs. I'm not trying to make this system as responsive as possible, but as capable as possible. If I understood it all right, maximum swappiness will ensure there is as much RAM as possible available for the active application. And I do have a fast SSD, so resur...

I need help getting myself a 64-bit Mint with Fluxbox
I think I have the goal in sight, now how do I get there? As told in previous thread, I will use this install to run a single somewhat heavy app on my slightly too old and weak laptop. In spite of the purpose, a web browser (Opera) and a music player will probably be running a lot of the time. To ge...

Re: Do I need a 64-bit OS to run 64-bit applications?
Now I've read about swapping for an hour or two, and I've found I will probably want my swappiness at 100 rather than 10, freeing up as much memory as possible for the somewhat heavy apps. I will have to try and try again, obviously. Also, I will probably want a bigger swap partition than I can affo...

Re: Do I need a 64-bit OS to run 64-bit applications?
Kudos to vrkalak for answering my question, Aging Technogeek for the elaborate answer, and this forum as a whole for the very quick response! :) I feel quite familiar with which versions are available, I did try to find it all out on my own first. I want my system to be stable, it might remain unboo...

[SOLVED] Do I need a 64-bit OS to run 64-bit applications?
Yes, I'm sorry, this is yet another thread on the question "What edition should I choose?". I want to run a few slightly heavier applications such as MATLAB, a CAD system if I can find one, GIMP and Audacity on an OS that is not as bloated as my Win7 install. I have only 2 GB of RAM, but a...

Yes, I think so... I will try, maybe by sunday.
But the question of the autoscaling icons still remains. How does that work? But maybe it doesn't belong to the newbie questions...

Rescaling of svg icons
Maybe the question is not stupid, but I think that I am... Somehow I was under the impression that svg icons are able to rescale automatically. It may have something to do with the fact that quite a few of the icons in my panel does... Now, I want to change the icon for the mintmenu. I browsed the f...

Re: Release: Linux Mint 10 RC
Some people have reported they couldn't make bootable USB stick, so I felt needed to post my experience. My first try didn't work, because of the mistake to point the Startup Disk Creator to the disk. Then I tried pointing it to the single partition on the disk, if I recall right it was formatted as...
