This is the great thing about Mint, it detects the new hardware and should work out of the box doing this.

Have you added yourself to the vboxuser group?

If so, open a terminal and issue this command

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

and reboot.

Look at this site, and try that example they show, as in adding

vga=771

to the boot parameters.
If this does not work, try some of the other options mentioned on that site.

You need to install the closed version directly from Virtualbox.org and install that to get USB working.
Windows should detect it as an ipod, if I am not mistaken.
