Re: Next re-install

You can export the list of installed packages to a text file using Synaptic, and import it again on a different computer. Note that this include all installed software, including libraries, drivers etc. It is generally recommended that you edit the text file before you import it. You can also do thi...

Re: hi hi!

#1, what are these folders on my external hard drive? on windows I just saw my personal folders, but now I also see "found.000", "$RECYCLE.BIN", "RECYCLER", and "System Volume Information". Also, I deleted everything in the 'recycle bin' - that's no big deal,...

Re: Hardware/system demand

Try some specialized distros, like VectorLinux (might not be the best), Ubuntulite or SliTaz (maybe even DSL or Puppy).

Re: System Crash

Which driver are you using? Remove all nvidia packages with System - Administration - Hardware drivers if you installed it that way and then use Envy to automatically install your driver.

Re: /Home Partition vs no /Home Partition discussion

There are just as many ways to go as there are users to select them, more or less. Choose the solution that works best for you. In example, if you have a large music collection on your HDD, make a separate partition for that, as USB transfer speeds are not good enough for 10GB ++ (or it is, but it c...

Re: System Crash

I would give it some time. And you can find out what your gfx card is by using:

Code: Select all

lspci | grep VGA
in a terminal window. If disabling compiz solved your problem, I would guess that it was related to the nvidia driver.

Re: System Crash

You (usually) never experience a system wide crash because of lack of RAM (and it isn't expensive, at least not here), I would rather guess that it is your graphic driver or maybe compiz. Could you provide a bit more information about what graphic card etc you are using?

Re: Linux and Apple

Linux and Mac are pretty far apart. Just imagine the difference between Slackware and Ubuntu, add a completely different kernel and a ton of proprietary stuff on top of that!

Re: Bet your glad you use Mint

There is a difference. that way it should be *legal*, where as in Mint is not legal for people who live in countries that acknowledge software patents. You can do the exact same thing as Mint does in Ubuntu.

Re: Hardware/system demand

That seems a bit to low to run a live session, you can try, but don't expect to succeed. You should look in to distributions that are made for legacy hardware.

Both nm-applet and mintUpdate uses more resources than compiz, even when rotating cube.. The main reason for not using Compiz is the bugs, cause it's not yet stable...

Re: Default keyboard shortcuts

TBH, I prefer GNOME DO, activate it by using super+space. It even keep a track of the applications/etc that you open the most, so I only press super+space then F and then enter and Firefox is open. It is so intuitive and brilliant to use, should be advertised more..

It might be related to flash and web 2.0, as I only use flashblock and are able to see the page perfectly fine. My guess is that it is optimized for IE, and thus doesn't works so good in browsers that adhere to web standards...

That depends on your computer, any of the F's is used, sometimes Del, Ins etc etc. Try, or check if the first screen tells you what button to "launch setup"

Re: Evolution?

I think you will save less than 1 MB or maybe up to 50 or 60 MB, not sure. Installed software barely takes up any space in Linux. You would probably save more by running: sudo aptitude autoremove once in a while.. And About Me is integrated in GNOME, so basically this software is a part of the GNOM...
