Re: What is the best way to install Virtual Box in Mint?

Go to the Debian-based Linux distributions section of the VBox site page at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads and follow the instructions to add the VBox repos to your software sources, then simply run sudo apt install virtualbox-5.2 The most recent version will then be installed and a...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I came to Linux in July 2005 with Ubuntu 5.04 (can't remember its code name) and have been with either variations of Ubuntu, mainly Xubuntu, since then. I have no need for any proprietary applications that run on Windows or Mac only so do not miss those OSs in any way. I installed Mint on my wife's ...

Re: Best way to install photography software

You can not, unfortunately, legally use the Windows 10 that you had on the laptop in a virtual installation if it was as an OEM install to the laptop. This may seem silly and unfair but only a full retail copy of Win 10 will install and be possible to register on your virtual hardware as an OEM vers...

Re: WIFI doesn't start after suspend

Here's a bash script (with all instructions of what to do and where to put it) which I have had to use in Xubuntu 16.04 which may also work for you. #!/bin/bash # Created by Hans Deragon (hans@deragon.biz), 2015-05-14 07:31:11 EDT # INSTALLATION # # - Save this script as: /lib/systemd/system-sleep/N...

Re: ~!#$%& Skype! (rant)

In the Skype Tools -> Settings menu make sure that you set Skype to start automatically but also that you do not select the "Start Skype in the background". It should then start as a working fully visible window but you can then simply close the window, leaving skype running in the background. I am ...

Re: Replace LibreOffice (5.1.x) with the flatpak version (6.x)

You may find that the easiest way to get LO-6 is to use the PPA repository (we can use it in Ubuntu so I think it will work in Mint as well). See the info at https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa about the PPA and how to add it to your sources. Using it will mean that the version wi...

Re: App launcher is not trusted

On some DEs that error appears if the launcher, ie, the desktop file for the application, is not executable.
I see this in XFCE, though I do not normally use desktop icons but a dock, and in my case the error offers two options; to Launch anyway or Mark Executable.

Re: Mint will not install

You do not say whether the Acer machine is using UEFI or legacy BIOS, but if it is new enough to be using UEFI boot firmware, it will need to have a trust setting for any Linux installation and a password for the UEFI settings will need to be enabled in order to change any settings. This is contrary...

Re: [Solved] Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

Still a problem here for me on firefox; with this forum open alone my CPU runs at about 5 - 10% but as soon as I open a second tab at that Telegraph page it shoots up to 90 - 100%. When I close that tab it's all back to the 5 - 10%.

Re: Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

Just tried that site on this old low spec (Atom 270, 1GB ram) netbook using Xubuntu 16.04, and at first I didn't see any problem at all until I opened the page about Soros. The opening webpage is pretty huge and seems to scroll down for ever, but even after looking for several minutes my top output ...

Re: Skype doesnt work anymore

On my Xubuntu 16.04 I am using Skype version 8.13.76.8 from the skype repositories that are enabled when you install the new version first time and mine is working mostly very well, but with a few things needed to get it running properly. I have mine set to autostart at boot or when I start a new se...

Re: Help with fstab please.

Also, if you use the folder /home/mintman/Music as your mountpoint for another disk, any files already in your Music folder will appear to have gone missing as you can not mount a device in a folder which already contains files and still be able to access those files. Change the mountpoint to /home/...

Or if you need to search the content of files you could also try recoll; it can be very handy if you're searching for a file containing a particular word, but also finds file names.

Re: Virtualbox crash

You have still not told us the guest OS; please do so or we are unable to go much further; having 512 MB ram for your guest will, however, be very limiting and you will never get Mint with any DE to run well with such a low ram amount, and certainly not one of the default Mint versions, as even LXCE...

Re: VLC media player

I don't know Mint very well any more nor do I know if you are using compiz ,but if it has compiz in use as window manager you may also need to install compizconfig-settings-manager to make sure the Window-decoration plugin is enabled. Alternatively you may find that restarting whatever window manage...

I suggest that you install the package dkms, not virtualbox-dkms which I have never installed in any of my hosts or guests; I just install dkms in both and it seems to work fine for my host OS and all my VMs.

Re: How to get into recovery mode?

I made these edits to my /etc/default/grub file in Xubuntu 14.04 and now 16.04 to ensure that I see the grub menu for a few seconds at every boot even though I have a single OS system which will not show the grub menu by default. GRUB_DEFAULT=0 #Next line will make the countdown time show menu by de...

You can also left click on the small down-arrow-head (or maybe the vlc icon) far left of the title-bar, or right click anywhere in the title-bar.

Do you actually see a title-bar or are you missing window decorations on windows?

Re: Firewalld vs GUFW

GUFW is solid. As far as I know, it just blocks ports using IPtables and doesn't do anything with services. And don't forget that GUFW is just a tool to make changes to the iptables firewall itself; once you have made changes to the settings as you want them there is no need for GUFW to be running ...
