Re: Lost "Printers" in the start menu

You should be able to start the printer dialogue with command

Code: Select all

system-config-printer
but I have no idea why it is missing from your current menu.

I do not know which menu-editor Mint uses but maybe either menulibre or alacarte may allow you to get the item back again.

Re: HDD won't mount

Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE! The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was made to NTFS by this software. This would appear to be your problem caused by not removing the disk properly and ...

Re: HDD won't mount

Have you perhaps connected this external drive to a Windows PC and then removed it without using the "Remove hardware" option in the system tray? If the disk is formatted as NTFS and not removed properly it will still be flagged as "In use" and therefore not available in Linux. You can only remove t...

Re: Synaptic and upgrading a software

For the *ubuntu distros there is a ppa repository at https://launchpad.net/~stellarium/+archive/ubuntu/stellarium-releases which you could try using; I know many ppas work in Mint so this must be worth a try. The packages are created by the stellarium devs themselves so will be trustworthy. It will ...

Re: Why oh Why can't we make Linux better looking

Depending on what you mean by your fonts looking bad, have you checked the font-rendering settings? I have no idea where they are in Cinnamon, but look around and you may find you can make a big change to the way fonts look. If it is just more fonts you want, have a look at http://www.fonts101.com/ ...

Re: Can't read SSD in Mint (unclean Windows filesystem)

Too late now but your problem may have been with the exfat filesystem which Ubuntu and I therefore presume Mint can not use without the installation of exfat-fuse and exfat-utils neither of which are default in Ubuntu; are they in the default Mint OS?

Re: xscreensaver startup

As I also replied to your thread at Ubuntuforums use the command

Code: Select all

xscreensaver --no-splash
in the command box of your autostart list.
How you find that will depend on your DE.

That should start the deamon at boot up or session start.

Re: What is the best way to install Virtual Box in Mint?

Go to the Debian-based Linux distributions section of the VBox site page at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads and follow the instructions to add the VBox repos to your software sources, then simply run sudo apt install virtualbox-5.2 The most recent version will then be installed and a...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I came to Linux in July 2005 with Ubuntu 5.04 (can't remember its code name) and have been with either variations of Ubuntu, mainly Xubuntu, since then. I have no need for any proprietary applications that run on Windows or Mac only so do not miss those OSs in any way. I installed Mint on my wife's ...

Re: Best way to install photography software

You can not, unfortunately, legally use the Windows 10 that you had on the laptop in a virtual installation if it was as an OEM install to the laptop. This may seem silly and unfair but only a full retail copy of Win 10 will install and be possible to register on your virtual hardware as an OEM vers...

In the Skype Tools -> Settings menu make sure that you set Skype to start automatically but also that you do not select the "Start Skype in the background". Re: Replace LibreOffice (5.1.x) with the flatpak version (6.x)

You may find that the easiest way to get LO-6 is to use the PPA repository (we can use it in Ubuntu so I think it will work in Mint as well). See the info at https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa about the PPA and how to add it to your sources. Using it will mean that the version wi...

Re: App launcher is not trusted

On some DEs that error appears if the launcher, ie, the desktop file for the application, is not executable.
I see this in XFCE, though I do not normally use desktop icons but a dock, and in my case the error offers two options; to Launch anyway or Mark Executable.

Re: Mint will not install

You do not say whether the Acer machine is using UEFI or legacy BIOS, but if it is new enough to be using UEFI boot firmware, it will need to have a trust setting for any Linux installation and a password for the UEFI settings will need to be enabled in order to change any settings. This is contrary...

Still a problem here for me on firefox; with this forum open alone my CPU runs at about 5 - 10% but as soon as I open a second tab at that Telegraph page it shoots up to 90 - 100%. When I close that tab it's all back to the 5 - 10%.

Just tried that site on this old low spec (Atom 270, 1GB ram) netbook using Xubuntu 16.04, and at first I didn't see any problem at all until I opened the page about Soros. The opening webpage is pretty huge and seems to scroll down for ever, but even after looking for several minutes my top output ...

I have mine set to autostart at boot or when I start a new se...
