Re: [Solved] Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

Still a problem here for me on firefox; with this forum open alone my CPU runs at about 5 - 10% but as soon as I open a second tab at that Telegraph page it shoots up to 90 - 100%. When I close that tab it's all back to the 5 - 10%.

Re: Firefox 58.0.1 freezes at Daily Telegraph

Just tried that site on this old low spec (Atom 270, 1GB ram) netbook using Xubuntu 16.04, and at first I didn't see any problem at all until I opened the page about Soros. The opening webpage is pretty huge and seems to scroll down for ever, but even after looking for several minutes my top output ...

Re: Skype doesnt work anymore

On my Xubuntu 16.04 I am using Skype version 8.13.76.8 from the skype repositories that are enabled when you install the new version first time and mine is working mostly very well, but with a few things needed to get it running properly. I have mine set to autostart at boot or when I start a new se...

Re: Help with fstab please.

Also, if you use the folder /home/mintman/Music as your mountpoint for another disk, any files already in your Music folder will appear to have gone missing as you can not mount a device in a folder which already contains files and still be able to access those files. Change the mountpoint to /home/...

Re: Search Program

Or if you need to search the content of files you could also try recoll; it can be very handy if you're searching for a file containing a particular word, but also finds file names.

Re: Virtualbox crash

You have still not told us the guest OS; please do so or we are unable to go much further; having 512 MB ram for your guest will, however, be very limiting and you will never get Mint with any DE to run well with such a low ram amount, and certainly not one of the default Mint versions, as even LXCE...

Re: VLC media player

I don't know Mint very well any more nor do I know if you are using compiz ,but if it has compiz in use as window manager you may also need to install compizconfig-settings-manager to make sure the Window-decoration plugin is enabled. Alternatively you may find that restarting whatever window manage...

Re: Virtualbox DKMS

I suggest that you install the package dkms, not virtualbox-dkms which I have never installed in any of my hosts or guests; I just install dkms in both and it seems to work fine for my host OS and all my VMs.

Re: How to get into recovery mode?

I made these edits to my /etc/default/grub file in Xubuntu 14.04 and now 16.04 to ensure that I see the grub menu for a few seconds at every boot even though I have a single OS system which will not show the grub menu by default. GRUB_DEFAULT=0 #Next line will make the countdown time show menu by de...

Re: VLC media player

You can also left click on the small down-arrow-head (or maybe the vlc icon) far left of the title-bar, or right click anywhere in the title-bar.

Do you actually see a title-bar or are you missing window decorations on windows?

Re: Firewalld vs GUFW

GUFW is solid. As far as I know, it just blocks ports using IPtables and doesn't do anything with services. And don't forget that GUFW is just a tool to make changes to the iptables firewall itself; once you have made changes to the settings as you want them there is no need for GUFW to be running ...

Re: [SOLVED] How to list all user-installed Linux programs

I've no idea where I first got the idea of doing it that way; I think it was a search I did in logs for something completely different, probably a grep in dmesg or similar, but whatever, I find it so useful I have had the alias mentioned above for a couple of years now along with similar aliases for...

Re: How to list all user-installed Linux programs

To see all the packages installed through any of the "apt"-derivatives, enter the following in a command window: apt-cache pkgnames Stuff you installed from Source will NOT be listed because that didn't use any of the apt-based commands or tools. But I think that shows every package that is install...

Re: Be gentle with me

Ubuntu forums aren't particularly rude, in fact it's the best Linux support forum there is, period. Debian forums aren't either. The issue there is that real experts (and Debian is meant for experts) do not have the patience to slog through questions asked by people who have no clue how to ask them...

Re: Folder Permissions None

You need to run that successful command recursively by adding the -R option to it.

Code: Select all

sudo chmod -R 0755 "/home/cata/Downloads/New Folder"
which will then change the permissions on all sub-folders and files contained within Downloads/New Folder.

Re: How do I connect my phone on USB?

This thread https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2226702 is for Ubuntu 14.04 on which Mint 17 was based I believe, so may also help you. I now use Xubuntu 16.04 in which android tablets and phones appear to connect with no file edits or any extra steps needed, so perhaps when, or if, you move t...

Re: Can't change desktop environments

Depending on the display manager in use, which provides the login screen, the cog to change DE may not be visible until you have entered the username and moved to the password entry screen.

I do not know if this is so in Mint with XFCE or LXDE but have a look to see when you get to the login screen.

I am pretty sure you can use alternative applications for all of those needs; in fact audacity is certainly available for Mint and something I have used quite a lot, so no need to look for an alternative for that. I don't know what the SAM encoder plugin for winamp is but there are many audio player...

Re: Is it the end for LMDE?

Just remember that as far as software packages are concerned, newer does not necessarily mean better and you may achieve a more stable OS by staying just a little bit behind the most recent versions of everything. I have a VM of Debian 9 in virtualbox and that has had very few upgrades to packages s...
