What about using compton for --vsync? I had to use this on an Xubuntu install.
WIth Cinnamon and an nvidia card I haven't had any tearing.

I was curious if anybody was able to get kernel 3.17 to work? I get a kernel panic, something about an init issue, I can give more details tonight.

The PC did have an internet connection at the time, but I had not installed updates. I have opensuse installed now, I'll run the update next time mint is installed.
