Greetings, I've found a much better way to do what I described before. In Chrome, under preferences->basics, click the manage button (near search). then on the Search Engines window click add and enter the following values: Name: Linux Mint Keyword: lm URL: http://www.google.com/search?q=site#sclien...

Just an FYI, every time I've had these sorts of issues it was driver related. I'd try updating before I went for a reinstall:

*Edited-> removed gdm stop/start as these are not relevant (sorry, I just switched from Lenny).

If Old Ruler is right about the source of your problem, then you can enter this in the terminal to try and load the monitor editor:
