slumbergod, I use an LXDE desktop, but the idea should be the same. Using synaptic I remove mono (which removes a few apps as well), pulseaudio, compiz and any gnome-* application that I don't need. Just be careful when removing libraries and gnome-* packages, see what other packages synaptic tells ...

I'm running an LXDE desktop, so I try and keep things simple.
