Canon lost a customer

Well, Canon has lost a customer. I won't buy any more of their products. My new Canon laser printer will not work with Linux, so it's the last Canon I buy (and I only bought Canon's or Xerox's before). I ended up buying a HP2605dn. The Linux install was a bit hairy, and I had to do it manually as th...

Forgot to update

Got Samba to work, sort of, before upgrading to Bianca. So I don't know if the auto-Samba would work or not. I still can't navigate to the Mint machine, but the mint machine can see the entire Windows network and navigate to any file on the system. Also got it using shared printers (where drivers ex...

Problem changing Icon Attributes for Folders in Mint

Ok, Not sure where to post this. It's been bothering me for awhile (about 2 months) but I never got around to posting it. I am running Bianca (just upgraded) and see the same issue. When going into the HOME directory, I create a subdirectory off home (say MY_DIR). Then I right click and select 'PROP...

Got it to work, finally

Finally got some help out at #samba. I had to put the IP address of the host machine (fortunately it was a static IP) instead of XPDESKTOP into the host field. That fixed it and now it prints correctly.

Whoops, still can't connect to Linux Mint from Windows XP

Ok, My bad. I assumed since I was actually seeing the linux mint machine in my network, it was working. However, when I click on it, I get a 'do not have access to this device, ask your local administrator' error. I can connect to the XP machine and the 2000 machine from Mint, however. I get the fol...

Re: Printer Sharing

The most critical information is choosing a driver when setting up and also the Connection tab. I'm using a Canon Pixma IP 5000 hooked up to a Windows XP box. I'm using the "ip4000" driver which seems to work good so far. If there isn't an exact driver get one as close as you can. Share the printer...

Shared Printer Woes

Ok,
I have a Canon MF5750, which does not have a Linux driver. :( Is there any way to print to this printer from Linux?

I know, I should do more research before I bug everyone

Ok, Got Samba to work after reading through the forums. Still can't get to the shared printer on the Windows machine, but I can navigate to the windows box now, and vice versa. :) GSAMBAD was what I needed, fixed it right up. I'll see if I can find a solution for the printer, if not, I'll post back ...

Interacting with a Windows Home Network Via SAMBA

Ok, I have SAMBA set up, and I can type in a workgroup/station (IE: MSHOME/DESKTOP/SHAREDFOLDERNAME) and access a Windows PC from my Mint PC. However, I can't navigate to it through SAMBA. SAMBA shows the Workgroup, but shows it as a page (only way I can describe it, the icon I mean) and when I doub...

Re: Shared Directory

Can you please give me the output of these commands: ls -al / ls -al /SHARED Thanks. Scorp123 Sure, sorry for the delay, holidays and all. Note that I can create subdirectories off share in TERMINAL, just not through the Gnome GUI. Is this a bug in the GUI? james@mint:~$ ls -al / total 120 drwxr-xr...

Wierdness

Well, I created two new users on the machine, and they all had the correct permissions on their folders. I guess it was a glitch in the first users creation. Since I can't reproduce it, and since I used the same steps each time (Basically System-->Users and Groups-->Add User, Fill out form), I guess...

Got it working

Hey Clem, Apparently the menu item I created by rightclicking on the menu and creating it didn't contain the menu specification (applications;games) in it. I edited the menu item after placing it in shared, added the specification, and it appeared on all users menu's. Thanks for the help. Sorry for ...

Confused

Ok, I looked in that directory, and I see a bunch of files. I even copied the menu item I created into that directory, but it doesn't show up on the menu's of newly created users. What I want to do is be able to install a menu icon and have it populate out to all users on the system. There has to be...

Yet Another Newbie Question - Global Changes to Menu's

Hello, Another newbie question. I have some software I want to install on Mint that is not part of the Mint distro (It's a Java based game). I don't want to install it for every user. So instead, I installed it off the OPT directory, and then went through and manually set all the attributes (since I...

Shared Directory

Ok, I would like to make a shared directory that all users on the same box can use to copy files back and forth. I would basically like to open that directory and all it's sub directories up to everyone on the machine (no restrictions, create, copy, delete, etc) anything in it. I created a directory...

Creating Users through the GUI not working

Ok, I'm new at this, but I think I found a bug. When I created a new user on my fresh install of Linux Mint, it created the home directory correctly, and added all the 'windowesque' sub directories. However, that user can't access them because the install did not change the owner (ROOT is still owne...
