Re: No updates?

I would advise against try ANY upgrades. My system tried it, most repositories failed, my system was messed up in total, and I have been at it 6 hours trying to get the mess fixed. Now at all worth it IMO. Best wait until someone decides to correct all the issues. I'll wait from now on for about a ...

Hmm, can't seem to add the PPA. bob@lmde ~ $ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:gnac-team/ppa Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/apt-add-repository", line 65, in <module> if not sp.add_source_from_line(line): File "/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/softwareproperties/SoftwarePr...

How to record an SPX file?

This seems like it should be simple, but I've already spent half the day on it. I tried gnome-sound-recorder, but it lacked a "pause" feature. If the phone rings while making a recording, there's nothing you can do except end the recording and begin a part 2 later on. Audacity still...

Re: Mint Update Speed Issues

The problem is that when there is something exciting happening, like a new release, the Mint servers get clobbered (too many people requesting downloads for the servers to handle smoothly.) Torrents can be a great solution which you might want to look into. You might also find that things work bette...

Re: HOW TO MOVE FILES?????

Well, cut, as opposed to copy, if you're using a gui such a Nautilus, or just use the mv command at the command line.

Code: Select all

$ man mv

People are often confused by the mv command. You use this both to rename a file and to actually move it.

Re: Switching from Gnome to XFCE or LXDE [SOLVED]

@josefg, Glad that was of at least some help. Now that Skype has been purchased by Microsoft, one has to wonder about alternatives to Skype. Perhaps it's just childish, but I really don't want any MS code running on my machine. Especially since it works as badly as you report. What alternative...

Re: microphone

I can't imagine what could be happening unless perhaps your previous speakers *did* have a microphone built-in. You might ask you brother to look at the old speakers and see if there is a pink- as well as a green-tipped plug on one of them. If so, that would be the microphone. Did the speakers sound...

Re: Switching from Gnome to XFCE or LXDE

I would look through the syslog (the record of bootup events) and look at the time stamps to see where exactly the delay is happening. 10+ minutes is VERY excessive.. something is wrong. Probably something hanging waiting for something else until it times out (just a guess.) The log will tell you, h...

Re: Don't mind the ads, but I sure hate them embedded . .

I have really mixed feelings. I don't. Get rid of 'em. But I don't think I'm seeing them. I'm using Adblock in Chromium, does that block 'em? My understanding is that Chromium/Chrome doesn't have the APIs needed to do true ad-blocking yet. I think that means that you still have to download the ad, ...

Re: Don't mind the ads, but I sure hate them embedded . .

I have really mixed feelings. Clem needs money to keep things running, and of course I want him to keep things running. Perhaps if more of us donated he wouldn't need to do this, but I suspect we've all donated as much as we feel we can at the moment. No easy answers come to mind. My personal decisi...

Re: Where are the error reports?

Under the System Tools menu there is something called the Log File Viewer which might be helpful to you.

Menu -> All Applications -> System Tools -> Log File Viewer

Re: partitioning

problem is as i stated....that i used the whole.....again....the whole drive..meaning no allocated free space. I think what you probably want to do is re-size one of your partitions downward to make room for a new partition. At least it sounds like your only option if you have no free space and nee...

Re: Status Report on Update Pack 3

Ok.....there was something about grub, and a question as to where do I want to install it? Right? Never happened. No question of grub was ever raised in my update experience today. I had the grub problem also. It told me that the partition or disk I'd originally installed grub on no longer existed,...

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking Testing - read here first-28/

So, basically, the wisest move for someone using "latest" and who doesn't really have time to play at the moment would be to simply hold off on upgrading to "3" until the "All Clear" is given?

I had checkgmail break recently but what worked for me is to add the -no_cookies option. Works fine now. I don't see an option for sound notifications though. Under preferences, there's a line for "Command to execute on new mail". I just stick in an aplay command, like this: aplay ~/newme...

Re: Is Ubuntu Driving Users Away?

It is driving me away. I've gotten tired of having to undo more of what Ubuntu has done with each new release, and being forced to do things the "Ubuntu Way". They may be able to attract new users, but it won't be because of me. I'm the only one in my work environment who uses Linux, and ...

Re: Does LMDE require swap partition?

My experience has been that the installer never correctly finds the swap partition. I have to fix it after each install with a two step solution: ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid This will give you the uuid for each of your partitions, and hopefully you'll remember which one you set as swap. gksudo gedit /et...
