Advice on Inspiron 3000 and Mint? Link to specific machines included

I've been away from Linux for a while, but it's time to come home. So much has changed, though, so after a couple of days poking around looking at new cheap laptops, I thought I'd check in with the hive mind on this. I'm considering getting this exact machine: http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productd...

Is this right?

Mike.
COULD be, but since the "last modified date" there reads July 23rd, I doubt it. (Yeah, I was excited, too.)

Re: MATE on netbook cuts off bottom of control panels

Thanks, man. No, it wouldn't resize, but I played around with the customize option under themes, and some of the window border themes allowed me to make the box shorter, thus enabling me to access the entire control panel. I'm going to test things out a bit more, but it looks like I can do MATE afte...

MATE on netbook cuts off bottom of control panels [SOLVED]

I use Cinnamon on my desktops and laptops, but I'd like to use MATE on my netbook, as it's more lightweight, and I'm not overly fond of XFCE or LXDE. The problem is that, as you can see from the screenshot, some control panels, etc., are cut off at the bottom, even with the panel set to autohide. So...

Re: Dropbox for Caja needs gnome, unity, cinnamon, and Rythm

Tdockery, thanks; it works perfectly! I love you, man. (Platonically, of course. :-D ) Perhaps the Caja integration package should be removed from the repos entirely, and the Nautilus integration package should be renamed Nautlius/Caja Dropbox Integration. Of course, as usual, the repos install Drop...

[SOLVED] Dropbox for Caja needs gnome, unity, cinnamon...

According to Synaptic in Mint 14 Mate edition (32 bit), Dropbox integration with Caja has well over a hundred dependencies, including Gnome, Cinnamon, Unity, and Rythmbox. For the most part, I'm loving Mate, but I depend on Dropbox to sync my projects across multiple machines, so this is kind of a p...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

On my ancient Dell Mini 10 Netbook: Cinnamon with Ubuntu 12.04 (wanted to see if the much-vaunted power-saving features of Pangoline were up to the hype). The two Cinnamon add-ons I find indispensable (in a hyperbolic sense, of course) are Classic Menu (the one that roughly simulates the old MintMen...

Re: Just realized I never posted a "real" introduction...

Fascinating story Rob. I wish I had done half of what you do. I'm just a run-of-the-mill retired Navy guy who has at least some of the same interests (scifi, science, etc.). Sounds like you'll definitely be a fun guy to have around. :D Thank you, sir, and good to (virtually) meet you! We old servic...

Just realized I never posted a "real" introduction...

I don't think my Dear John letter to Ubuntu counts as an actual introduction, since it consists mostly of my attempt to make with teh funneh about my switch from one of my favorite OSs to one I like even more. And I totally neglected a chance to talk about me, me, me! Unlike me at all. So here goes....

Re: Dear Ubuntu, Leaving you for Mint--A "Dear John." letter

while I see your point (and I've been hooked by mint the same way) I also think it's somewhat ridiculous for a longtime user to make such a fuss about tweaking the system and installing some packages after a fresh install.! Oh, sorry if it came across like that. I was just trying to have some fun w...

Re: Dear Ubuntu, Leaving you for Mint--A "Dear John." letter

PS.If you look around Mint forum you'll see evidence of all sorts of tangled dalliances - people running Mint and Ubuntu,Mint and Windows,Mint and Arch. Some of us even run three.....I have Mint 9 ,LMDE and Crunchbang Statler... I don't know whether to chide you for being an OS philanderer o...

Re: Hello!I'm a Malaysian linux noob!

Welcome! I'm a Mint noob, too (although not entirely a Linux noob). If you ever get to the point at which the only thing keeping you from ditching Windows on your HD is that you still need it once in a great while, you can always install VirtualBox and run it at near-native speeds from inside Mint. ...

Re: Dear Ubuntu, Leaving you for Mint--A "Dear John." letter

Thank you kindly for the welcome, inktitan. :-) And I'm glad you found my little missive amusing. I DO feel a little bit bad about leaving Ubuntu, though. If not for Ubuntu I'd probably never have moved to Linux as my primary OS, and most likely wouldn't have really started getting to know Mint. But...

Dear Ubuntu, Leaving you for Mint--A "Dear John." letter

For my own amusement, I wrote a "Dear John" letter to Ubuntu, and thought that some here might find it amusing, as well. Dear Ubuntu, I've loved you for years now, and I still do, but I'm leaving you for Linux Mint. Yes, I know Mint is built on you, just as you're built on top of Debian, but... Look...

Re: Mmmm Minty...

Hey, Jessi, good to see you here! (This is Shannon "Waffles"'s husband, Rob.) Joined the forum just a couple of minutes ago and, lo and behold, yours was one of the first posts I saw. Thanks for turning me on to Mint, BTW. Probably wouldn't have given it another try if Shan hadn't mentioned that one...
